    I worked at Merrithew™ full-time

    Pros

There are some really great front line staff working there, with great ideas and passion. Too bad their ideas will go no where or take decades to be considered. Great product, however new products and programs of their key brand has come stagnant.

    Cons

It all starts at the top, when one of the stakeholders of the company is never pleased, belittles and/or yells at other management members out loud in meetings and places where others can hear, fear and stress sets in at the top and trickles down. Nonetheless, yelling at someone is not acceptable in a work place. What I noticed in my time there is management out fear for themselves started watching out for ... their own backs. How does a team move forward when you can't trust each other in fear of being belittled. This type of behavior (watch out for you) was encouraged and trickled down into their departments and front-line staff. The work load is extremely high. Every year goals were increased, but rewards of increases for all staff wasn't offered, not even cost of living. To get an increase they had to add another layer of responsibility, and management has to go through hoops to get approved. Everyone is already working to their maximum, how can they take on more. The stakeholder of the company is never satisfied, insists on being a part of every decision, however doesn't respond, so nothing moves along. If something is moved along because it had to, it wasn't good enough for him, so his disapproval yelling or condemning begins. Those that survive there, just do the job. I assume if they had it before, they have lost their passion, as their fight has fizzled.

I worked at Merrithew™ full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The company has a lot of great people, many of whom have been there for years and have a lot of knowledge. There are good benefits with great support for work-life balance. Lots of opportunity to learn and grow in a business that provides exceptional products and education offerings.

    Cons

At times, decisions could have been made more quickly.

    Advice to Management

Continue with a lot of the wonderful initiatives in place for staff. Consider sharing longer-term plans with all teams so they understand the broader goals.

I worked at Merrithew™ full-time for more than a year

    Pros

No overtime On the subway line

    Cons

A place stuck in the 80s. All the things businesses have grown to learn about good management over the last 30 years didn't go through Merrithew. It's all about control, optic and egos. Management is content and delusional. Environment is dark and dusty, with dirty carpets and paint falling off the walls. Doesn't feel Health & Fitness for a bit, makes you feel very poorly about yourself.

    Advice to Management

    Care for your people.

    I worked at Merrithew™ full-time

    Pros

location and most of the people that work there

    Cons

I'm not going to dwell on the many negative aspects of this horribly run company. The previous reviews cover most of them. The poor reviews from years ago are still relevant today. This company refuses to change, and, as a result are being left in the dust. The fitness industry, competition and customer base has left merrithew in the past.

    Advice to Management

Stop the micromanaging. Loosen up the wallet a bit. Stop being so damn cheap. And, an executive overhaul might actually save this dinosaur of a company.

    I have been working at Merrithew™ full-time

    Pros

Location is the only pro... easily Accessible via TTC

    Cons

Lack of morale, lack of work ethics from managers and senior leaders, promotions are based on friendship rather than performance, no core values, lots of disengagement from staff, managers are not qualified for their positions, favoritism and biased managers. Expectation to work extra hours without overtime pay. Environment inside the old run down office is stale, dry and not welcoming. 99% of the employees are... unhappy and are looking for work. Firing, employees resigning and the hiring process are the only 3 things that are consistently happening at Merrithew. You can often see Managers arguing out loud with each other - very unhappy place. Will be glad when I leave... no career growth here. You will learn nothing here that will help your resume...
