I have been working at Mesa County Valley School District full-time

    Pros

Great hours, flexible time off, good benefits & retirement plan.

    Cons

Low pay for what is required, better training and more opportunity for advancement.

    Pros

You work independently and set your own route.

    Cons

Custodial staff always treated as second class workers. Insurance is a joke, and the contract pay steps haven't been paid for 7 years.

    Advice to Management

The people that clean up after you and the students are people too. And they need more time and people to do their job fully.

I worked at Mesa County Valley School District full-time

    Pros

Fellow teachers are generally great, helpful. Curriculum is well defined. Class size is reasonable (about 25 average). They try to limit the number of different preps, I taught only 4.5 classes (one remedial class was 30 minutes) per semester.

    Cons

Fairly normal problems, but still annoying: you serve at the complete discretion of your principal for the first two years. Fellow teachers have no input, you have no input. Pay is low for the number of hours and effort you put in.

I have been working at Mesa County Valley School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working for a number of organizations, both public and private, I have never been with a group that is so unified behind its mission. In this case of course, the mission is to educate the students. In every organization you will find people that are more difficult to work with, but in a lot of those cases, those people are also counter productive to the mission of the organization. I this case, even if you run into those rare folks that are harder to work with, you still get a sense that overall they are really in it for the kiddos. I really respect the culture and attitude, both as an employee and as a parent of students who attend the district.

    Cons

The benefits and pay are sub par. The Health insurance is so poor, the district should warn new employees that there basically isn't coverage offered. Its very high priced and with an almost $10,000 family deducible. PARA is of course a very nice option for retirement, but benefits basically end at that. The pay is also not very competitive.

    Pros

Working with students and the staff that attend and teach at MCVSD schools is great. You are a more than welcome member of the team and your opinions and thoughts are respected right away.

    Cons

This is not a job you want to have if your supporting a family or are trying to pay off any sort of debt. As the salary is among the lowest in the state of Colorado. You are often needed to work longer than you are paid for and the benefits are terrible besides the PERA retirement.

    Advice to Management

In order for there not to be a shortage in the paraprofessional position the pay needs to increase significantly. Also any time an individual works past their required hourly contract. It needs to be accounted for and overtime pay needs to take place.

I worked at Mesa County Valley School District full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The school I worked for in the district had a great sense of community.

Any problems I had that were reported to the district, such as questions to payroll, insurance, or technical problems, were answered quickly and in a friendly manner

    Cons

While there are many training opportunities that help advance knowledge, many of them are unorganized or repeated information. During training, many who are there already have a grasp on the subject leading to time being lost for other work or activities.

    Advice to Management

Make sure all training is appropriate for all levels of understanding. Be able to address those who really need help and those who already know the material.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Mesa County Valley School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I enjoy helping kids learn to discover and use advanced skills in their search for a place in this changing world. It is incredibly fulfilling.

    Cons

I simply cannot raise my three kids and my minimal bills on a teaching salary schedule that is basically a pyramid scheme for the teachers who had no other options over the years and somehow hung on to make over 50 grand.

    Advice to Management

Pay a professional teacher a professional salary.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Mesa County Valley School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They are pretty much the only district for most of Mesa County, so they really don't have any competition.

    Cons

Like many schools and districts, they have no idea what they are doing and are just throwing ideas at the wall, seeing if there are any immediate results and if they'll stick. They have teachers drop everything to try a new idea out and then never do any follow up.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that it is actually the principal who is running the school and not the custodian like out at Loma Elementary.

    Pros

Lots of good people to work with. Some of the support staff, such as accounting are outstanding.

    Cons

If you get on someone's bad side, they can make life miserable

    Advice to Management

Communications between departments is often lacking.
