    Pros

Staff working directly with clients and community members are dedicated and committed to helping transform lives. I had the privilege of working with individuals who truly upheld the Core Values of the organization. Most managers and directors were strong advocates for their employees. The ability to work on new and emerging areas of concern in the health field was encouraged by some leaders. Depending on your role, you could meet community organizations outside of San Antonio that were deeply impacted by MHM's philanthropy and help share their story with the greater MHM family. I felt surrounded by compassionate, highly intelligent and skilled professionals who truly felt a calling in their work. There were opportunities to share ideas and thoughts among group members and connect with the Director of Church Connections to ensure alignment with the work and mission of the organization.

MHM has a large financial resource that many other nonprofits do not. This allowed staff members opportunities not usually found in other groups. Employee benefits were generous. I truly appreciated HR's ongoing communication to help employees tap into various opportunities and being open to suggestions. The HR Director is approachable and knowledgeable.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the dominance of male leaders allows the organization to be misled at time. There is not much diversity on the board or executive team. I witnessed some disrespectful conversations and statements from male leadership towards female employees and leaders. I also witnessed certain directors outright lie about other staff members. Yet, even once reported, it did not seem like much action was taken. The disheartening part of this is the inability or reluctance of other executive leadership to correct this behavior or take a stance of not tolerating such behavior.

Very little communication from the board on big developments or changes until very recently (Summer 2016). However, it seems the executive leadership and board members are more concerned with managing the for-profit hospital, Methodist Hospital System, than being directly involved with the happenings of the mission organization, MHM.

    Advice to Management

Take the time to get to know team members in small group settings and listen. Listen without needing to answer or having a course of action. This will help mend bridges. Opportunities like Retreat Day are not the events to tackle serious concerns. You will learn more from dedicated staff in smaller, genuine settings. And if listening isn't a skill you possess, tap into other leadership personnel who are capable of this to help you.

I worked at Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company was restructured during my tenure and this made it easier to make things happen for our patients as well as the staff. The pay scale increased and insurance coverage improved.

    Cons

There are no cons when working for this company. The pay is slightly on the low side, but the benefit package more than compensates for the difference.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work, I believe in your cause, your mission, and I am proud to have worked with such a wonderful company.

I worked at Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Feel good about the work that you do each day. Really an opportunity to give back and help others in need all over S. Texas.

    Cons

While the work is meaningful. The political environment of this organization leaves little to be desired. There are a handful of wonderful directors though and the regular staff are good people. Since leaving and finding the company I work for now, a large, global for-profit with upper management making 3 times as much as MHMer's, it is interesting to me how politics is left out of the equation, it is not tolerated, upper management does not consider themselves as "seperate" from the rest of the organization, very wonderful company, no pettiness and we all focus on getting the job done! I had forgotten what it was like to work in a healthy and stable environment with people who understand business, integrity and stewardship...people who foster the best relationships with others and who do so with the highest levels of sincerity. If is unfortunate that a company doing such amazing things like MHM has such a terrible work environment and lousy reputation to boot.

    Advice to Management

Learn from other organizations how to manage effectively or step down so real people who care about the Mission and adhere to Core Values can step in and make MHM a wonderful place to be proud of....there is a reason MHM has never won Best Place to Work...

I worked at Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Recent organizational changes and efforts to build a more positive organizational culture are bringing about needed change.
Employee benefits are better than majority of other companies.
    Opportunities for professional development.

    Cons

Is a nonprofit with too much corporate thinking/practices.
Not all opportunities are equitable. Unless you know the right people or in a certain department, you may not see as many opportunities for growth as others.
Insurance premium is too expensive to cover entire family.

    Advice to Management

If you really want to live by the mission of the organization, begin by listening to the staff members who work directly with the communities the organization serves. Too many times, the staff's voice is silenced because the leadership wants to 'have the answer' when all the while, the staff is just trying to help better serve the community and contribute to the whole of the organization.
