I worked at Metrohm USA full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Coworkers were great.

Ion-analysis technology was very good and robust. Wonderful set of customers.

    Cons

The arrogance of the upper management team is unbelievable.

Micromanagement and silo culture. Each department has its own agenda despite overarching goals.

    No work/life balance.

Upper management team for the most part is a group of "Good old boys" who do not have any experience outside of Metrohm and it shows. Any input garnered from prior experience is dismissed out of hand.

Not stomach for major decisions. Important sales or management tactics are decided on at the last minute and changed regularly.

    No vision for the future.

    Advice to Management

You should get more experience at an executive level from the outside.

Consider having an independent board of directors.

There are some wonderful people and some horrible people. Many people stuck in middle management or lower because the executive team feels threatened.

    Pros

Great products, well known in the industry, Tech Support really trying to support field sales and customers.

    Cons

Technical training is essential due to the complexity of the automated chemistry systems but VERY little training is given to the field sales reps. It is learn on the job, sink-or-swim. Responsibilities are on overload including manning shows, sales meetings, travel, quoting complex systems, data entry on customer info, installations, user training, and on-site service. Parts are often missing, wrong parts are sent to rep, and lack of support from Area Managers. It is a big blame game by Management. They ignore their own short comings.

    Advice to Management

Revamp your training programs. Dumping loads of technical information on reps in a few short days and testing them to see if they remember it is a waste of time and money. Give more training by CD or DVR for review. Look to Shamadzu's training programs. Listen to your field reps and give them support. Stop looking for someone to hang.

    Pros

Co-workers are amoung the best people I've ever met. The environment is stimulating and resourceful. There is a great deal of help and support from headquarters which houses a team of knowledgeable, friendly associates. The benefits and compensation opportunity are the best that I have experienced in my 31 year career in this industry. The company provides all materials and resources necessary for successful completion of each individual's goals. Industry, application, technical and service expertise is abundant and of the highest caliber.

    Cons

Upper management lacks critical experience. Important decisions are delayed at times with little or no insight to macroeconomic implications. The company has recently undertaken a major move and reorganization which caused a some what less than desireable transition.

    Advice to Management

Improve communication from employees. Acknowledge the knowledge and expertise available from field and subordinate personnel.

    Pros

Even though high work load they understand that life happens and the importance of family. Great staff and enjoyable to work with everyone even management.

    Cons

Heavy work load with high exceptions, insufficient training but they are improving, upper management needs more experience and needs to keep to their word.

    Pros

Good product line, good coworkers, and experienced coworkers on the products themselves. Personal days offered on top of vacation days.

    Cons

Many changes to employee interfaces that cause inefficiencies. Upper management lacking heavily. Going above and beyond is not rewarded. Policies seem to be vague and made up as they go.

    Advice to Management

Somewhere along the way someone lost sight of the true focus or the true focus was changed. Maybe realign with the right leaders who have a realistic intellectual goal and an efficient way of getting there and things might improve.

I worked at Metrohm USA full-time

    Pros

Great products, excellent customer focus, & a large range of product line offering that os of superior quality. Applications knowledge and inside technical team phenomenal.

    Cons

Micromanagement rampant. Upper management consists mostly of people who have been brought up through the business or acquired businesses. This sounds like a good thing, its not, the result is a group of rigid, chauvinistic, men who have blinders on and blame everybody else for everything to cover themselves & their poor people management skills at all costs. They were lucky guys that won the territory lottery with a good product to sell. It was not because of their skill set.

    Advice to Management

Diversify your upper management. Stop sending people running to the competition.

I worked at Metrohm USA full-time

    Pros

The people and products are good. The company is stable and benefits are fine. Work/life balance can be okay at times.

    Cons

While there a lots of good people here, the upper management team leaves much to be desired in terms of actual leadership let alone management. A very risk averse organization that is changing only because they are being forced to. Executive team used to be dynamic but is now just a good old boys club.

    Advice to Management

It may seem kind of trite, but don't drive out or marginalize good people because they happen to have a different opinion than you. This isn't your fiefdom to rule. You are not dealing with a monolithic group of subordinates.
