I have been working at Metropolitan Market part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-The benefits that come with joining the union with medicare, needs to stay 3 months to get them though.
-Great people to work with and the time is portioned out nicely on a pay per hour
-They have active training and your first day will be a full hands on training approach
-The environment is open and bright so it doesn't feel so cramped inside, like stores without windows, ect.

    Cons

Inconsistent times on your schedule depending on your position and it is dependent on other employees (may need to take over shifts if they're sick, on vacation, ect.) General things on that nature

    Pros

Sandpoint is a great store and location; the customers make the job so much better than most.

    Cons

As with any grocery store, union pay rates and the hours can be daunting, but if you are vocal and respectful to your managers they can help a lot.

    Pros

A nice place to work where employees can sit next to customers in the outdoor tables. Great food from different parts of the world. full benefits.

    Cons

A leader who lacks character or integrity; managers often:show lack of performance; poor communication; self serving nature; “my way or the highway” leadership styles; Lack of Focus and Follow-Through; Leaders satisfied with the status quo; Leaders not attuned to the needs of the market; Leaders and favorite employees not accountable; leaders not focused; lacking vision. Lack of training, coaching, mentoring. No career advancement opportunities, unless you know someone inside the company. Company encourages employees to hire their relatives or friends which creates conflict towards good employees.

    Advice to Management

The moral of this story is leaders need to be honest, have a demonstrated track record of success, be excellent communicators, place an emphasis on serving those they lead, be fluid in approach, have laser focus, and a bias toward action. If these traits are not possessed by your current sales management team, or your up and coming leaders, you will be in for a rocky road ahead

I worked at Metropolitan Market full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay isn't bad. If you work in the more "food industry" jobs like the cafe or the kitchen then there's some cool people you'll meet.

    Cons

One of my managers had completely lost his marbles and the company still allowed him to oversee us which made the whole team very uneasy. They expect a ridiculous amount of work.

I have been working at Metropolitan Market (More than a year)

    Pros

The company definitely pays you what your worth

    Cons

The company hires people based on personality which is not always the right thing to do

    Advice to Management

Think about more incentives for employees. IE 401K...

I worked at Metropolitan Market full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Their culture for a union store is superb. It's not management vs. staff; it's us working together to enrich the lives of our customers. Pay is on union scale, so it's competitive. Customer-centric focus is what it's all about here.

    Cons

Dress code is a little tired. Some may feel the organization feels top-heavy, but the company is structuring for growth. Like any retail, hours can fluctuate and working weekends is a must. Could there be some more attention put towards work-life balance?

    Advice to Management

Invest more in employees, better training programs to help those good team members become great, help those who want to advance. The Retail Support Center should be available on weekends too! I remember several times where my support team could have better served me by working weekends also. I think it would help your team members morale if they knew you could be counted on when we need it most.

I worked at Metropolitan Market part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fairly relaxed management. Good food, plenty of samples around the store. Customers mostly friendly white people. Bagging groceries can actually be fun if you get into it. You get to outside when helping customers.

    Cons

Minimum wage. Customers mostly snobby white people. Smelly garbage machine out back. Often boredom-inducing. Refused to hire me back for winter season. Sometimes it's raining and customers still need help, and they rarely tip (not that they're allowed to).
