Benefits were great. Flexible hours, great coworkers & home office support staff & management. Great environment and enjoyed the day to day of it. Would still be there if shops hadn't closed in 2008-09.
Cons
Limited payroll and budget for these not-for-profit shops. Hard to compete with other retailers rates and sales successes. Small store sizes held back potential sales & growth. Ended up having to close the shops around the county except in NYC area.

It's a roller-coaster

Obviously it feels wonderful to work at such an iconic institution. The benefits are great - very high matching program, 5 weeks vacation time to start, supportive culture for working parents, and an ID that gets you free into all over institutions in the city. The level of morale fluctuates, as most places, but most people here are driven to make the Museum as successful as possible. There are definitely times when I feel very excited to be here and working on certain projects.
Cons
Many people make their entire careers here, so it's stable, but the career advancement opportunities are infrequent and move very slowly. Each department is very different, and the level of workload, influence, and competence varies dramatically between each, as does the amount of respect and support from executives. Only the high profile and 'cool' departments get anything close to what they need. Try working 60 hours a week in a dirty basement. Also, when morale is low, it is very low, especially for junior and part-time staff members. Most hard-workers are burnt out after 3-5 years. Great staff members are always one foot out the door.

Pros
Great benefits even though compensation is not at a competitive level with the current market.
Cons
It is very difficult to create a career trajectory here when you are a young professional, as promotions are had to come by.

I couldn't be happier.

My department is constantly looking for ways to improve the way we work and the services we offer to the public. Our department head is always accessible and open to suggestions from all staff members.
Cons
The Museum is a non-profit organization so we'll never make the same kind of money as people in sales or finance, but I'm totally fine with that. My job is spiritually rewarding, has great benefits, and I make a living wage.

Pros
Great benefits, including paid vacation and additional holidays.
Cons
Most people come from non-profit, and are accustomed to an excruciatingly slow pace of work. Not a great place to be if you want to learn fast.

Pros
Benefits and schedule are great
Cons
No room for upward mobility
