I have been working at Metropolitan State College of Denver full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The office I worked in was professional and had minimal politics. Work life balance was equal. Had some overtime but comp time was available. it was great working with students and the faculty.

    Cons

There was a certain amount of politics at the College in general. The pay was a bit lower than I would have hoped and upward movement was available but you had to wait a bit longer.

    Advice to Management

Given the budgets are large, work with employees to move up in their careers.

I worked at Metropolitan State College of Denver part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working for student government, you are employed by the college and are able to access many of its employee resources (e.g. training, conferences, etc.). It is evident in the work environment that everyone cares about the students of the university. Though there may be differing opinions at times on what is best for the students, I feel that just about everyone I worked with had the mission of the school--to create lifelong learners--in mind. When all else fails, everyone comes back to that.

    Cons

The student government experienced many unhealthy conflicts during my time there. Some of the leadership was ineffective in creating a cohesive and positive culture. The con in this environment is that unfit people can step into leadership roles, especially when hiring in the legislative, judicial, and upper executive branch occurs in the form of voting, where most of student population base their choices upon the bios, names, and pictures of the candidates. Perhaps a stronger screening and qualification process, evaluating character, work ethic, accomplishments, and authenticity, ought to improve the continuity of quality leaders on MSU Denver's student government.

    Advice to Management

Be kind, work hard, and amazing things will happen.

I worked at Metropolitan State College of Denver part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There was lots of freedom within the tutor center to do your own work when you had no students asking for help, but often you didn't have to worry about it because you got to help a lot of people! Students start becoming regulars and depend on you. Very flexible with student schedules.

    Cons

There were some awkward moments when a student I tutored tried to ask me out. You only get hired per semester so if you want to continue working there you pretty much have to reapply every 6 months or so. There is no vacation or sick day but you aren't working full time anyway so it's not a big deal.

I worked at Metropolitan State College of Denver part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It's encouraged to work on your assignments if there are not relevant work duties to be handled. Work is not difficult. Flexible scheduling.

    Cons

They pay could be higher at first, but if you do well - then you may get your raise for the next semester.

    Advice to Management

Keep allowing openness among the student workers. Maybe encouragement to do more work/etc that could lead to higher compensation.

I have been working at Metropolitan State College of Denver full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

We work with a lot of first-generation-to-college students. It's a very diverse and global campus climate. The faculty are here because they want to teach first, serve second, develop professionally third. The staff are here because they care about the students. Emerging excellence in select areas.

    Cons

Low pay. Marginal benefits. One of the most underfunded institutions in the country. Reputation as one step up from a community college - modified open enrollment. Employees in some areas have significant fear issues. No career path for staff members.

    Advice to Management

Admit only those students who are done with remedial courses and are ready to do college-level work. Don't abandon the non-traditional students while you're courting the traditional age ones. Students need more services such as child care. Take control of those areas that UCD is under utilizing. Audit HR.

    Pros

Downtown Denver location is great and the College's mission is beyond reproach.

    Cons

People work in silos, most senior management positions are filled because of political connections, not experience. This creates a highly political environment rather than a functional workplace. The president is set on doing what he wants to do despite any input from others. People praise him as a leader, but he has poor people skills and is racking up debt at an extraordinary rate.

    Advice to Management

The emperor has no clothes, and neither do those surrounding him. Time to clean house.
