Not for the highly skilled or educated
Feb 2, 2019 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
If you can withstand the below average pay scale for your education/skill level and accept that poorly educated union clerks/personnel get paid substantially more than the attorneys, managers, even some assistant directors - then you will be able to enjoy the retirement benefit package. The active benefits are generous as well.
Cons
Programs and business mindset are antiquated. Old railroad mentality very much present. Little to no room for advancement unless you “in” with the right group. Inequitable benefits and pay in comparison to other agencies within the MTA not to mention other employers. While they will speak on “people first,” this is for the public and their perception. There is no real concern about employees, they continue to add obligations and responsibilities without any concern for work life balance -ie) STAR program the recently implemented Mandatory volunteer program forcing employees to change their schedules and be placed in remote locations with no security or facilities - no concern for parents with children and their schedules or what risks their are to employees who are FORCED to get home at all hours of the night. I can continue but I won’t - please understand this is just the icing on the cake.

Train Service Supervisor
Dec 2, 2017 - Train Service Supervisor in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Job security. Plenty of opportunities for advancement and I believe it to be one of the most diverse workforces in the world. I spent almost 37 years there and was able to retire with a great pension and lifetime medical benefits. I had a great career; the job is what you make of it and I have no regrets.
Cons
The job is 24 hours a day / 7 days a week. You will spend a lot of time away from family and friends; the family needs to be understanding. Once you get into supervision / management, you see a lot of what drives the MTA is politically driven and media / publicity sensitive.

It is a comfortable environment. It is also a fast paced detail orientated and casual dress atmosphere.

They have good health care and retirement packages. They also have good vacation and sickness days benefits which are acquired on a monthly basis. In addition to mandatory personal days. Most jobs are union which is a plus and have inexpensive monthly membership dues. The unions are very effective in cases of a disagreement with management.
Cons
Too many nosy people, lotta haters. The organization does not encourage team work nor, does it provide employee incentive programs. There have been a lot of cut backs and minimal raises.

No regard for employee safety - POOR COVID response
May 31, 2020 - Manager in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good retirement benefits and excellent for those who lack a formal education to receive a hefty salary.
Cons
No genuine regard for employees. While we are a public agency and understand our responsibility to the public - there is no regard for employees. During this Covid Pandemic - staff has been continually sacrificed and placed on the back burner. Now despite some employees being able to effectively work remotely - metro north employees are being called to offices with no safeguards in place. Wear a mask and report to work. That’s there only concern.

Bad Environment to work in. Not a good please to work
Aug 2, 2019 - Applications Development Specialist Lv V in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
They just started giving 3 days of work from home opportunity.
Cons
Too much bureaucracy. It took me 1 full month to get a computer connected to the network and ready to work. The whole please is like a ghost town people hardly talk to each other. Management structure out of wack because most heigh end IT personal will not like to work there. It will be a great place to retire because it is kind of slow over there and the retirement benefits are good. Iron g

Absolutely love the work, but company practices leave much to be desired.

being outdoors, meeting people while taking tolls, giving directions and feeling I've helped. Most staff very kind and helpful
Cons
the city doesn't want to hire anymore permanent office employees and pay benefits or pensions. They take advantage of desperate people to work a max of ONE year, and then we're on our own. And the permanebt officers treat us as just passing thru, no respect..
