Pros
The best reason to work for the MTA are that it is a very relaxed environment. They are part government and part private so they do not have pressures that many companies have. The people there thus are relaxed and easy to talk to and friendly. There are not many deadlines, things get done when you get to them. Another important benefit is that once you have a job, it is very hard to lose it. As true for any government job, they are not effected by the business cycle and it does not get effected by wall street. This makes working there more pleasant as you do not have to worry about losing your job.
Cons
The biggest downside of working at the MTA is that they do not pay well. There salaries are very low when you compare them to what you could make in the private sector. What may be worst, is that once you have a job there it is not that easy to move up because people tend to stay there until they retire. This could hamper your progress as you may have to wait years for a promotion when they person above you leaves or takes another position. Also, they pay in a range of what you came in making so if you start off there you will make notably less than someone who came from the outside even if you are doing the same job as them.

Excellent work environment and excellent benefits
Aug 15, 2022 - Vice PresidentRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
If you're an expert in your field, the MTA is a great place to work. There are plenty of promotional opportunities for high performers and salary is commensurate with experience.
Cons
As a public agency, some things which may seem simple in the private sector can take longer than expected to accomplish, e.g., filling open positions.

Pros
Vacation and sick time, good health insurance.
Cons
Management employees (Salary workers) are treated like scum. Current CEO of MNR is all for the union and does nothing for it's salary workers. Don't expect raises for several years and no bonus. You will be watched like a hawk all day via multiple cameras and (even though your salary) will need to swipe in everyday and provide your thumb print. MTA police will also stand over your back to make sure you swipe in. (Very Big Brother situation)

Lack of Growth Opportunities
Mar 18, 2023 - Applications Development Specialist in Jamaica, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good health insurance and free rides with up to two commutation passes.
Cons
Your first impression will be the poor onboarding experience. Even up to a year after your start date, you will be filling out paperwork to get access to basic needs to do your job. There is no flexibility. Remote work was reduced to two days a week and will be reduced even further if you take time off. Managers even have the right to deny remote work for certain employees. The work life balance is terrible. You will be required to work overtime even if it's not in your contract. You won't receive overtime pay because of how your contract is structured. Salaries here are already below the market rate and raises don't keep up with inflation. The worst part is the lack of growth opportunities. You will be stuck in the same position for years without a promotion. Good work will be expected of you but don't expect a reward back. Managers will lie and dangle promotions like a carrot on a stick to keep you from leaving. Unfortunately, there is nothing here that's worth staying for. The technology stack here is old and existing processes are dysfunctional and a hindrance to development. No one works as a team, and you will be looking at legacy code all day. It is best to leave and never look back or you will stagnate.

No regard for employee safety - POOR COVID response
May 31, 2020 - Manager in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good retirement benefits and excellent for those who lack a formal education to receive a hefty salary.
Cons
No genuine regard for employees. While we are a public agency and understand our responsibility to the public - there is no regard for employees. During this Covid Pandemic - staff has been continually sacrificed and placed on the back burner. Now despite some employees being able to effectively work remotely - metro north employees are being called to offices with no safeguards in place. Wear a mask and report to work. That’s there only concern.

Pros
Technical, fast paced environment, good benefits, nice people, fun place to work (most of the time). No matter what you do, you will always be proud to work with one of the best, most advanced railroads in the United States.
Cons
Pay is not on the same level as private sector. Not a lot of room for creativity, heavy, almost militaristic chain of command, lots of variability in management practices. Not easy to move up; salary doesn't cover cost of living in metro area.

Pros
Salary range is from $14.00 to $21.00 for Security Officer and higher if promoted to Senior Officer. PERS retirement, and Teamsters Union.
Cons
Due to the poor economy the overtime has been cut back, and a desire to start hire unarmed guards has made the new salaries in question.
