I have been working at Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Always looking to improve, acquire more customers (passengers and airlines). Take care of employees very well and have numerous airport related events throughout the year.

    Cons

Difficult to communicate possible improvements. Lack of a single goal across all departments in the authority.

    Advice to Management

I think management should work more closely with employees. I believe it would help they're bottom line and passenger services. Also, various departments in the authority need to work with each other to create uniformity.

I worked at Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Highly functional organization with well-developed functional business units. Management seeking to align technology offerings with business units to deliver the bottom line. Pay is good, an alright environment to kick start your career.

    Cons

Not an innovative environment, business units may be used to getting work done by outsourcing to consulting companies. Technology managers are not good managers of people.

    Advice to Management

To keep working on the organizational culture, to be truly open to ethnic minorities, social and culturally diversity.

I worked at Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, Pay, Raises, and Stability for those who make it past the one year probationary period!

    Cons

Each department has its own unspoken rules and management styles. There is no uniformity or streamline of processes. They are about 10 years behind the Private Sector is basic business infrastructure. Each VP does as they wish; some manage very well, while others let their subordinate managers manage. Managers do not have any formal training in management and therefore lack necessary people skills. The median age at MWAA is 47 and there’s a lack of diversity at HQ. Board of Directors are self-serving. Any former MWAA person can come back as a Consultant and make $$$$.

    Advice to Management

Acquire “Best Practices” and implement it throughout The Authority. Concentrate on the “client” not only being the Airlines but also your own folks. MWAA is behind the times when it comes to family-work balance and telecommuting. Insist management take management courses in order to manage and try to work towards a common goal rather than individual goals that try to out-shine other departments. Avoid hiring FAMILY and PLEASE hire some people with vision and integrity, rather than keeping the outdated folks with no vision or ethics on board!! Also, pay attention to what "Consultants" really do and keep an eye or their charges... there's lots of unethical behavior going on there and in their Contracting Department!!!

    Pros

Fellow employees are great people. Great work/life balance. Nothing too stressful.

    Cons

No recognition for good work. Some (not all) managers have poor leadership/managerial skills. No change, which means no new abilities to learn.

    Advice to Management

Learn to manage people first and foremost, and you'll get better results with work products too.

    Pros

Although not the most fun, MWAA does have good people working for them. The employees are not money hungry, performance addicts. Rather they are people with balanced work and social lives. You will grow to like the coworkers you work with.

    Cons

The work was boring. There were a lot of data entering jobs, cabinet organizing tasks, etc. Basically, as an intern, you were there to make the workers' lives easier.

    Advice to Management

Update the infrastructure of the business admin office. Transferring all your information to and electronic database would make work easier and more efficient for the workers, including interns.
