I worked at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Metropolitan is a special district of the state of California and as such enjoys some of the perks that come with government work: manageable hours, pension, generous benefits, lots of regulations that protect employees, and big and meaningful mission: providing water for 19 million people in Southern California.
Most employees are very smart and dedicated to the mission. There is also quite a bit of creativity involved in solving interesting problems, from Engineering to Water Supply to HR.

    Cons

This is a highly political environment and because of visibility to the world, things tend to move extremely slowly and cautiously. What makes this agency very polite and civilized can turn into analysis paralysis. Anyone driven by quick action for quick results would find it exhausting to work here - as probably would be the case in most government agencies anyways.

    Pros

Well funded, efficient water agency who can afford to hire the best of the best in the public agency world.

    Cons

Hard to get in the door, since each open positions draws hundreds of applications.

    Advice to Management

Offer flexible work schedules to employees, less chain to the desk mentality. Otherwise, great place to work.

I have been working at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (More than a year)

    Pros

great place to work. Lots of experienced people at this company. Work culture is getting better. Management really cares about workforce. Good mix of private and public atmosphere.

    Cons

Occasionally there is some bureaucracy, but this is more of a fault with the industry than with Met. There is a lot of unnecessary back and forth with other stakeholders (Caltrans, County, etc) who still tend to have issues improving interactions with external agencies.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up good work
