    Pros

Excellent and professional organization that promotes individual growth within para military establishment. Great opportunity for promotions and excellent benefits!

Weekend, nights and holiday work. Basically, 24/7 operation

I have been working at Miami-Dade Police Department full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

New, young, and progressive leadership. Moving in a positive direction with strong leadership that's going to be around more than just a few years.

    Cons

Has recently lost, and will continue to lose for the next few years, a vast amount of experience due to retirement. County Bureaucracy can be stifling

    Advice to Management

Hang on to your experienced employees as long as you can and listen to their advice. Ignoring links to the past can lead to the needless reinventing of the wheel. Find a balance between youthful exuberance and wisdom.

    I worked at Miami-Dade Police Department full-time

    Pros

Ability to advance and learn various facets of law enforcement. Had great benefits. However, with budget cuts we had lost all but 2 holidays a year. You could still accrue annual, sick and compensatory(in lieu of OT) time. Easy to take time off.
Fellow employees were great to work with. As in any job you might have to work with or for the token idiot.

    Cons

None that I can think of. Commute times were bad an only getting worse since Miami-Dade County is continuing to grow.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work and continue to hire the best people you can.

    Cons

The job is stressful not knowing that what may happen from day to day

I worked at Miami-Dade Police Department full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Pay was decent until the mayor started trying to balance the county budget on the backs of the people who make the county run.
My coworkers were great people and I made friendships that lasted even though I've moved away.
Respect for work-life balance was pretty good so it was easy to get time off when needed.
It was a stable place to work, no layoffs

    Cons

You get treated the same whether you go the extra mile or do the minimum. Some employees do literally nothing and management doesn't care.
Promotions for yes-men and the politically-connected were decided in advance and interviews were done for show.
    No crosstraining.
No upward mobility--middle management is all relatively new to the position (those promotions mentioned above) so it will be a long time before there are any management openings.
People retire or leave and aren't replaced so fewer people do more work.
Initiative in networking with officers is discouraged; management is a powerful demotivator.

    Pros

The large size of the Miami Dade Police Department provides many different places to work within the Police Department itself.

    Cons

Some times too many type A personalities in one place can lead to conflict. Some people get promoted based on who they know, not how hard they work.

    Advice to Management

Don't ever forget where you came from. Be fair to all employees and supervise fairly. Don't forget to train, guide, direct, and motivate your people. Lead by example.

    Pros

Progressive, professional work environment with good leadership

    Cons

Tight economy. Some of the benefits for future employees may change. Part of the Florida State Retirement System.... Future benefits may change

    Advice to Management

Continue to develop personnel with potential, focus on succession planning

    Pros

Exciting job, helping the public is rewarding.

    Cons

Old boys club alive and well.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate the smart, dedicated officers, instead of promoting your pals. Would make for an excellent department. Give kudos to those who deserve it, not those 'in the know."
