I worked at Miami Valley Hospital (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Frontline staff (in all areas) and some committed middle management

    Cons

Administration's focus on Studer leaves them far more disconnected than they realize, Their focus is what is entered in the computer; there is no actual follow up with the staff to see if the rounding is being done. Managers that are staffing are marginalized even when it is due to short staffing and is being well communicated. VP does not follow up when there is a clear disconnect between Director and Managers. COO and CEO involve themselves too late in issues and do not get the entire story. In 32 years of my career-15 years at MVH with 3 prior administrations I have never seen such myopic, preconceived views. The staff engagement scores have plummeted .

    Advice to Management

This is for administration; not middle management. Less focus on Studer computer input and more focus actual staff feedback. Respond to and ac upon deliverables with measurable outcomes.

I have been working at Miami Valley Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Large network of hospitals with varied opprotunities for experience

    Cons

Many staffing issues, limited resources at times.

    Advice to Management

Advocate for adequate staffing, maintain staffing and acutity standards. Just because we are surviving with limited staff doesn't mean we should work that way all the time.

I have been working at Miami Valley Hospital full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great staff that always works together
    The best Neonatologists around
Excellent care is always given to the infant and family
Nurses can be advocates for their tiny patients

    Cons

The hospital is run as a business
Management does not address staff concerns
Benefit cost increases every year with significant less coverage
Raises are minimal and cost of living raises are unheard of anymore

I have been working at Miami Valley Hospital (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Great people to work with
    - Some management will bend over backwards to increase employee satisfaction
    - Depending on department/field there is room to grow including partnerships with Universities to further education (especially for nurses)

    Cons

    - Cooperate management does not appear to have any idea of what actually happens in the hospitals sometimes
    - Middle management at the hospital level can be spotty, at times it seems like patient care and satisfaction gets left behind (and all the burden put on staff) in favor of a CYA and hands off approach
    - No inflation raises anymore
    - Performance bases raises are very low

    Advice to Management

Thoroughly examine middle management practices to ensure that patient satisfaction is a burden of the system, not the employees. Cooperate management needs to come down to the ground floor and repair the disconnect between themselves and what actually happens.

I have been working at Miami Valley Hospital full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It is an established and awarded Magnet facility. Autonomy for nursing is expected. The Team Work between ALL Interdisciplinary members is beyond amazing.

    Cons

There aren't really many cons. Upon being hired, job descriptions are clear. This is a facility that is well established and award winning. A Level I Trauma center, and the first Comprehensive Stroke Center in the Dayton area. The expectations are set high for every employee, you either fulfill those expectations or move on.

    Advice to Management

On the Executive level, stop cutting benefits for the employees. We get it, there is a budget that needs to be balanced somewhere. You can't expect employee satisfaction and to keep turn over to a minimum, when you cut back on TOP hours, and increase insurance premiums etc.

I have been working at Miami Valley Hospital full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

For a food serving job it pays decent. There are a lot of other jobs to move to in Premier if you'd like.

    Cons

Horrible management structure from the top down. Business minded instead of healthcare. Patient safety is at risk with shortages in staffing and unhappy overworked staff members in all departments. Went one year with no raise, only had 3 small bonuses in the 9 years I've been there.

Health insurance moved to their own company and it's embarrassingly bad. Rates and copay's keep rising with no extra benefits.
