I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good Discount, Great place to work if you enjoy crafts and art

    Cons

You have to make a goal for customer "rewards info" and many people don't want to sign up or just don't care about it. We ring up kids and men that are shopping with the kids and they don't care to give any information out. This is not fair that job performance other than how many rewards customers gave you their information does not mean anything to them. If you're not collecting the specified percentage you're not doing your job and some people work doing recovery and only ring customers as needed. I have been there for 3 years and I no longer enjoy my job. I'm a good employee, I always cover when I'm needed or called in to help out but none of that is recognized, if my emails are not at 60% they want to know why. This job has become annoying.

    Advice to Management

Stop making employees feel like they're worthless. Emails do not clean the store and put away returns nor do they help customers on the sales floor.

    Pros

You get to meet great people and help them with their crafting needs

    Cons

It was very petty and if you weren't friends with the managers you didn't enjoy working there.

    Advice to Management

I would watch out for managers stealing.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time

    Pros

Friendly customers, good coworkers, decent hourly wage, management has favorites

    Cons

Not a lot of hours, management has unrealistic goals.Feel like my manager doesn't like me. I do everything I need to do and fix the mistakes I'm told and still get reprimanded. Got thrown on a register after 10 minutes of training, forced to pressure rewards program on customers

    Advice to Management

Set proper training and realistic goals, communicate with employees in a clear, professional manner

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of walking and physical labor resulted in steady weight loss.

    Cons

Often needed to stay after scheduled shift to finish jobs.
Lack of consistent supplies for building fixtures.

    Advice to Management

Have a proper online training class for new employees before they have to work a full day in the warehouse. New employees struggled constantly with some of the most basic tasks because of a lack of training, communication, and trust. Some employees left after a few days because of a fear of the workload and a lack of confidence.

I worked at Michaels Stores part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Customers are usually pretty great with great crafting ideas, and the discount is really a bonus. Employee and customer feedback is addressed quickly by corporate.

    Cons

Pay sucks. It isn't competitive. Even with annual raises, not even close. If managers are inept or unequal to task, forget it. The entire store suffers- even if it is just one. And if management is bad, morale goes down the drain. Trying to go over their heads ended in retaliation. High turnover is always put down to "retail", unfortunately, even when longtime employees get fed up and leave.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to your employees' feedback about management. Have more than one person responsible for hiring managers when management turnover is HIGH, not to mention employee turnover. And pay more attention to your instructors. They are not given any attention, respect, training, or information unless there is a class ASAP.

I worked at Michaels Stores full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great co-workers (I got lucky with this)
    Long time clients
The actual hands on work can be enlightening.

    Cons

The pay for what you do is incredibly poor. Well below framing industry levels if you do it anywhere else.
They expect everything to be done in 30 minute blocks. This is simply impossible.
Hours will be cut and then you'll get harped at for not being to get things done.
The sheer amount of tasking required to get through a day at a higher level frame shop is ridiculous.

    Advice to Management

You have so much work to do at the levels above general managers. You're completely out of touch with what it takes to retain talent and actually provide pay to keep at a level with which they can survive. I rode the bus for five years to get to work, but I worked 35-40 hours a week. Learning to frame is expensive, and you people don't seem to understand that.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time

    Pros

    1. The discount is pretty nice (30%).
    2. Flexible hours.

    Cons

    1. Poor pay. Arts & Craft stores typically pay pretty well (Hobby Lobby for example). Not sure how Michaels expects you to use a discount when you're making barely liveable wages.
    2. Minimal training. In one 5 day week I had MAYBE 2 hours of training in the CASH OFFICE. Money is pretty important to a company, so I thought my training would be thorough.... nope. Second day in, I was thrown to the wolves: assistant store manager called out, the store manager was off and didn't feel the need to come and help out his store, and the MOD had no clue how to do the cash office. The following week, first day in that week, I was told by the store manager that I was too slow in the cash office and needed to step up my game... 2 hours of training.... 2....
