I worked at Michaels Stores full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They attract really creative and passionate art people into their company.
Generally flexible schedule- willing to work with your school or personal life.
    Employee discount is 30%

    Cons

They tend to change their rules, dress codes, policies, and how they are even traded in stocks constantly.
The part time people start with such low wages and hours, it's hard to keep worthwhile people.
Training is a power point video and baptism by fire.

    Advice to Management

Pick something and stick with it. It used to be a great company to work for. Passionate and artistic people who loved to help others. Changing policies constantly makes consistency and mastery impossible. It frustrates the part time workers and creates a burden on management. This company has lost many good people because of arbitrary policies. Take some time to think about what you really want and focus on that. Trend-jumping will hurt you more than anything.

I worked at Michaels Stores part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Honestly there aren't too many

    Cons

I was not really given any sort of training. I watched a girl at the register for about three hours and then they sort of left me to figure out absolutely everything else. The management was obsessed with e-mails and stupid stuff that didn't actually affect customer satisfaction. Managers were frequently rude to customers and the employees below them with impunity.

    Advice to Management

Train your employees properly and get managers who care about people.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Good products for both crafters and fine artists alike
    - Coworkers are great and really helpful
    - Have great coupons for customers

    Cons

    - All training is put in the hands of existing employees. Training should be a mix between employees and managers. Two of the managers at my store are surprised when you don't know how to do something, for example, how to use the RF gun or how to book a birthday party. How can we know how to do those things unless we are trained for it? They put new employees right in the thick of it and expect you to learn everything yourself, and if you don't know how to do something it's your fault, while in reality it's the managers fault because they did not train you properly.
    - There should be a separate section for returns, exchanges, and phone calls. Cashiers at the front have to do everything at once, which is unfair to the customer you are trying to help who is standing right in front of you when you have to take a call. It's too much to handle, especially during the holiday season, and for all of that work, as well as doing returns and recovery, we are underpaid.
    - There should be student discounts for customers. A lot of students come to Michael's to get their supplies for school, and many of the items they have to buy, such as paint, canvases, and sketchbooks, are very expensive. We should have a 15% off entire purchase discount for those with a valid school ID, just like we have for teachers.

    Advice to Management

Have more respect for your employees, because without us you wouldn't have a successful business. We do a lot of work and help a lot of customers, so the least we ask for is proper training to do our jobs correctly and not be made to feel inadequate if we don't know how to do something.

I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time

    Pros

Friendly staff, flexible hours, 30% discount off of sale and regular priced merchangidse

    Cons

    Long hours, Understaffed, Under paid

    Advice to Management

Learn how to better time manage, pay your employees a decent salary, quit changing the policies every other week, train your basic employees better and make your management staff understand that they need to delegate.
