I worked at Michaels Stores part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Discounts, kept busy, I enjoy arts and crafts so I always had an interest in talking with people about the merchandise, coworkers were nice

    Cons

No chance to move up, I was stuck as a part time sales associate. I liked my job and I was good at it but there was no where to advance in the company. Management played favorites too, you could tell who was going to be on the floor most nights and who was going to get more hours.

I worked at Michaels Stores part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

nice coworkers, interesting to see items and art work customers frame. Good way to learn framing, good for an art student.

    Cons

company very stingy on hours, instead of scheduling a full day would put people on 4 hours here and there. Since they did not offer a full time position, made it difficult to schedule another part time job so that I could earn a full time living. Very inconsistent.

    Advice to Management

keep a closer watch on store managers who were trying to operate on shoestring staff to earn themselves a bonus. ridiculous!

I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Flexibility in merchandising your store
    Employee discount
Company constantly tries to raise the bar
P/T Management position that works nights and weekends allows flexibility for F/T Management to alter schedule to meet needs of the store

    Cons

Not enough payroll to carry out customer service initiatives or freight flow in challenging stores. Extra payroll should be allocated to make these buildings more customer centric. The store would recoup the extra dollars in additional sales. Furthermore, truck processing goals are unrealistic since more than half the company is unable to hit them consistently.

    Advice to Management

Company processes work in most stores however there are some that require extra payroll (for various reasons) to stay recovered, well stocked, and customer focused.

I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I love what we sell and knowing that I am helping people express their creativity. The merchandise we sell is awesome.

    Cons

Michaels is a results based business. They expect a lot of work out of each employee. Every minute must be used wisely. This is not a good job for someone who has weak multitasking or time management skills.

    Advice to Management

Hold every employee accountable for their work performance. The second you make an exception for one, you have to make an exception for all. And as the only salaried manager in the building, any work left unfinished falls on the store manager's shoulders.

Great opportunity to stock up on craft supplies at the monthly sample sale.

    Cons

Very limited career opportunities and developmental training.

    Advice to Management

Remember the people on the front lines that make business happen!

I worked at Michaels Stores (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Early morning shifts, management position, working in crafts.

    Cons

No overtime opportunity, low pay for all of the work you are expected to do.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees a livable wage! I was a hard worker that did my job well, and I left because I was not compensated accordingly. You ask a lot, but do not want to give anything.

I worked at Michaels Stores full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The products are fun to use and fun to sell. The coworkers are amazing. It was a great store, and I miss the job, but not the BS from corporate. The job was really fun, but it was really stressful to constantly be understaffed.

    Cons

Corporate under-budgets payroll for EVERYTHING, hoping to motivate people to work harder. Unfortunately it just frustrates the people who actually care about accomplishing goals. The managers are constantly getting yelled at by corporate either for over-spending payroll, or for failing to finish projects.

    Advice to Management

Stop shorting the stores on payroll! You can't give customers a good shopping experience unless you have the manpower to stock the shelves, clean the bathrooms, help the customers, check out the customers, etc. Cutting corners is hurting your customers and driving away your best employees.
