I worked at Michaels Stores part-time

-Under and over hires (so always stretched thin but somehow not enough hours)
-Customers are annoying like anywhere else

    Advice to Management

Please just hire the right amount of employees

I worked at Michaels Stores full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun work environment, flexible with schedules, management - store manager will either make or break your experience. I had a really great one when I started and a pretty bad one when I left. Frequent radical changes in direction from corporate. Some good some bad.

    Cons

Pay raises are a joke - pay went up less than a dollar in 2.5 years. No vacation the first year is ridiculous. The health care for full time employees seemed very complicated and not very good. I didn't take it for these reasons and stayed on my husbands. High turn over can puts management in a state of always training.

    Advice to Management

Annual raises should be more substantial. Being with the company for 2.5 years and not even getting a $1 raise was ridiculous. Also not having vacation for the first full year is very hard on your full time staff. Maybe consider 6 months.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits are good, the products are fun, the associates (at my store) are amazing!

    Cons

Corporate is disconnected, the workflow for the replenishment team is ALL OVER THE PLACE. One week, the poor managers are scrambling to find enough people for everything, and the next week there are no hours for anyone. I understand that this is a seasonal industry and that the workflow will vary from season to season, but there is no reason for this in May! It's just poor planning on the part of corporate.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Discount, friendly associates and customers. We don't open or close too early or late.

    Cons

Corporate changes things so often and it's hard to be mindful of all of the SOPs and changes.

    Advice to Management

Teach the managers more instead of micro managing them. Let the managers manage

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time

    Pros

My coworkers are cool. The managers have been super. Customers are fun.

    Cons

Sales can be confusing. Signs sometimes seem to indicate all items within close proximity is on sale when often times the sign is for only specific merchandise. This can lead to hold ups for sign checks.

I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I work with a wonderful team. I oversee a great team of cashiers and the other managers are good at what they do. The benefits are decent and so is the pay.

    Cons

The corporate structure is an absolute mess. They recently began laying off managers from smaller stores by combining and eliminating full-time positions. We are not allotted enough hours to either give to current employees or hire new ones and, as a result, we're usually pretty strapped. Because of this, wonderful employees are leaving even though the environment is friendly and the managers treat them well.

    Advice to Management

Please stop cutting hours from smaller locations. It's already difficult in the off-season, but it will be incredibly difficult to deal with during the peak season.

I worked at Michaels Stores part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great retail work environment. Enough tasks to keep you busy without feeling overwhelmed.

    Cons

Very little opportunity for advancement/raises. Like all companies with part time employees: you'll never have more than 25 hours a week.
