I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    I can't think of any.

    Cons

Never have a full crew, constantly told to work faster because we are timed the same as if we had full crew, positive or constructive instruction doesn't exist, questions are considered complaints, suggestions are completely ignored, and management plays favorites. Cashiers have to push memberships, which keeps customers waiting in line, and we get less of a discount than customers can. Customers constantly complain.

    Advice to Management

Wake up and stop treating people like we are less than human. Hire people who are not apt to taking weekends off, or calling in sick, and who actually know about arts and crafts. Don't expect miracles to happen without providing us all with working tools. We do not care how much money the store is making - there is nothing we can do to change the environment - that's your job. If our hours are based on sales, corporate needs to pay attention to what they are missing instead of punish us.

I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It pays the bills until you can find something else. A sort of lackadaisical atmosphere if you have no real ambition.

    Cons

Exceptionally out of touch leadership. Culture is built firmly on CYA and blame. This has lead to a stagnation at best and degeneration as at the worst. Lay-offs are pretty rare as most team members evacuate of their own accord.

    Advice to Management

My best piece of advice would be to live up to the principles that you write on the wall. A little humility would go a long way with most team members. I think most team members would agree that the over the top hypocrisy and lack of accountability are the two biggest issues that need immediate correction.

    Pros

My coworkers are cool. The managers have been super. Customers are fun.

    Cons

Sales can be confusing. Signs sometimes seem to indicate all items within close proximity is on sale when often times the sign is for only specific merchandise. This can lead to hold ups for sign checks.

I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I work with a wonderful team. I oversee a great team of cashiers and the other managers are good at what they do. The benefits are decent and so is the pay.

    Cons

The corporate structure is an absolute mess. They recently began laying off managers from smaller stores by combining and eliminating full-time positions. We are not allotted enough hours to either give to current employees or hire new ones and, as a result, we're usually pretty strapped. Because of this, wonderful employees are leaving even though the environment is friendly and the managers treat them well.

    Advice to Management

Please stop cutting hours from smaller locations. It's already difficult in the off-season, but it will be incredibly difficult to deal with during the peak season.

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

An entry level job, good for building experience, very flexible scheduling.

    Cons

Not a career company, not easy to move through the company, lots of turnover because of low wage and low mobility.

    Advice to Management

If you want lower turnover rates, you should start hiring for higher positions in-company instead of continually expanding the bottom rung.
