I worked at Michaels Stores part-time

    Pros

Good experience for customer service skills.

    Cons

Compensation was lacking in terms of part-time pay for what tasks were asked to complete daily.

    Advice to Management

Higher pay for part-time employees for all tasks asked to complete each day/night, while maintaining a positive attitude.

    Pros

Love my coworkers, some really amazing customers who make it worth the BS, food in the break room, no drug test, facial piercings and tattoos accepted, easy work, employee discount applies to sale items, help pay tuition when you reach 2-year employment

    Cons

Holidays are CRAZY, some customers are ungrateful and rude (but that's retail), raises suck, poor management, shifts are only 4 hours

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fun environment, Friendly co-workers, Easy going

    Cons

I started out working as a part-time seasonal sales associate/cashier, I was under the impression I was going to be paid $8.30 an hour, I've been working there for close to five months now and I'm being paid $7.25 while other associate's who do the same thing I do are being paid $8.30 an hour.
Management is often unprofessional to employees, yelling and complaining when they're inconvenienced. I called to tell them I couldn't come in fairly recently and I was hung up on. There are a few who often take shortcuts on tasks, leading the sales associates to also take those shortcuts and then get in trouble later on.

    Advice to Management

Be clear on wages. Be friendlier towards employees.

I worked at Michaels Stores part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Exposure to creativity, art, supplies, crafts, employee discount.

    Cons

Expected to work without breaks, expected to run register and recover sales floor, clean, help customers etc etc for such low wages. No room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Hire people specifically to do go backs and recovery during peak seasons. Higher wages, employee breaks

I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Cool customers with off-the-wall projects; customers who rely on your crafting expertise; 30% employee discounts on regular and sales items

    Cons

Has totally trashed its commitment to customer service; if there are enough man-hours in the schedule to greet customers and/or maintain the store, it's not making its daily plan. Company is in the final weeks of phasing out most of its full-time positions. Associates are penalized for providing teachers/seniors/military with the discounts to which they are entitled. Customers abuse coupons on a regular basis.

    Advice to Management

Yes, retail is changing, and Michaels is a high-volume, low-margin store -- but what brings customers INTO the store is knowing they can get expert help from its long-term and craft-knowledgeable associates.
There is a LOT of coupon abuse. You need to generate individual one-use coupon codes to prevent customers from running the coupon merry-go-round (one item per transaction, get back on line for the next cashier, and/or bring a dozen family members for one item each with coupon) and also track coupon use to Michaels Rewards numbers and credit-card numbers.
Associates should not be penalized for giving teachers, seniors, and the military the discounts to which the corporate policy says they are entitled.

"MICHAELS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE:("

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Michaels has changed not the same great company it used to be years ago about 4 years ago would have been 5 stars and could be again but as of right now, not good.

    Cons

No payroll Heavy work load and NO consideration for store management down. DM should be fired.

    Advice to Management

Put more efforts into the team that makes it all happen for you, your associates, stop cutting payroll and putting such unrealistic demands on your stores, You lost focus of what's important , your stores, your customers, is where it all happens, so stop making it so much more complicated than what it has to be SIMPLIFICATIONS, by the way did not make it easier on your stores it made it way more complicated. There really is a easy fix to what's happening in your stores, stop listening to everyone lie and tell you what you want to hear, it works its great, well NEWS FLASH IT IS NOT. look at sales . Need to take a close look at some of these reviews on line, may tell you some truth as to what is really happening

I worked at Michaels Stores part-time

    Pros

Merchandise discount which is still only 20%.
Being around people who enjoy crafts, (if you do as well.)
Employees find solidarity in their shared misery.
    At-will employment.

    Cons

Low pay -- your labor isn't worth much at Michaels.
Horrible hours -- short shifts, often only one cashier on at a time. Poor scheduling choices.
High expectations despite virtually no training.
    Unnecessary gender roles.
Terrible customers -- "anything goes" return and coupon policies bring out the worst in people.
Long lines during the holidays and weak leadership that can't keep their cool or take control of the floor.
    Stressful work environment.
Shared tills -- you could end up responsible for someones cash handling mistake.

    Advice to Management

Customers and employees alike choose to support companies that value their team members. Either get on board with that or be prepared to be replaced entirely by amazon.

Work early in the morning and you get to leave before the store opens usually

    Cons

Not the best hours at times, but you are guaranteed 20 hours a week at least

    Advice to Management

Schedule people properly, because there are times where we don't have enough people
