    Pros

Good benefits, annual/sick leave available, holidays off, nice income, good people to work with, family friendly, casual Fridays with donations to good causes.

    Cons

Work load is sometimes overwhelming, depending on position - may have to work weekends and holidays, may have to work around inmates.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees - they do have very good ideas that would benefit the company. Review all suggestions and inform employees of your thoughts.

I worked at Michigan Department of Corrections full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

When I hired into the Dept in late 1994 I received quite a generous benefit package with a pension life insurance and health insurance until I am 65. I retired 7-29-16 to draw my pension and complete my master's degree.

    Cons

I worked in cell blocks for 22 years providing human services and performing an assessment called the Compass on inmates that were housed there. I worked right along side of Correction Officers. The majority of Correction Officers lack a formal education and you can be hired to be one with a high school diploma. They lack cultural competence and have little or no communication skills. The sad thing about this is with their high school diploma they can be promoted to Sgt. Lt Capt and Deputy Warden

    Advice to Management

Hire more people with a formal education. and make a formal education required for the Supervision positions.
