I worked at Michigan Department of Corrections (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pays better than other medical areas. No one wants to work there so you can get a job easily.

    Cons

Treats employees worse then prisoners. Medical management have no idea how to manage people only worry about how they look. Make changes without knowing how it impacts the job or safety of patients. Worse place I ever worked and always pointing fingers at the staff.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to manage people, Hire people with education on how to treat people not just a nurse being promoted. Do not attack your workers stand behind them.

I worked at Michigan Department of Corrections (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Max pay is good once topped out for only needing a HS diploma/GED and 15 college credits. Some excellent training.

    Cons

Negative work environment. Pay has been static for years. Raises give a little up front to be eaten up by rising cost and erosion of benefits. Staff are often more difficult than prisoners. At the mercy of politicians who view cutting corners and privatization as a solution to rising costs, but end up costing more in the long run. Staff shortages, mandatory overtime, shift work, work most weekends and holidays. No longer looked at as a career.

    Advice to Management

Promote only quality candidates and individuals with experience and common sense. Play by the rules. Stop looking for lop holes, skirting around the issues, and protecting people who have a bad track record. Some of the foulest people in corrections have the most skeletons in their closet with misconducts that has been blatant and constant.
