I have been working at Michigan Department of Health and Human Services full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

There are managers that care( not only about the children) but their worker’s overall well-being and self care. Smiling is contagious. Communication is necessary.

    Cons

Whatever position , in whatever organization you choose to work , there will be cons. However, if you realize the job is not for you- GET OUT- you are dealing with “ real matters” of “ some” who have been afflicted or people that are “ not aware that they have some barriers to identify...this position won’t be a walk in the”sunny” park. If you can’t embrace the rain, storm, sleet, snow and ice, you are bound to “ fall” Don’t apply for the position with the state if you are doing it for the wrong reasons.

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Michigan Department of Health and Human Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good benefits and pay when compared to other social work positions.

    Cons

The high turnover rate, micromanagement from upper management, very high caseloads, extreme inefficiency, and mountains of paperwork make working in either CPS or foster care for MDHHS a very difficult position. The way the system is set up almost ensures failures for both families and workers alike. There is a fog of toxicity in the air in these offices. Some people don't even last through training. Chronic stress is felt by most due to the nature of these positions. The entire system needs an overhaul. I would highly recommend individuals look elsewhere for employment.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Michigan Department of Health and Human Services full-time for less than a year

    Pros

NONE. Complete disgust for the child welfare system

    Cons

Fyi..you will be told that you are not there to help families and stop the cycle of abuse and neglect, because you do not have time to help and or refer for services. You are only there to investigate if child abuse and or neglect occurred. Pathetic that to ensure jobs, just like the prisons, they do not want to fix or better the population. The case loads are out of control, case count time is only time cases drop, so that they will be in "compliance" . Helping families is not encouraged or acknowledged and they just want dispos done so numbers look good, worst job ever. Staff are beyond unprofessional
