I have been working at Michigan Department of Health and Human Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Excellent benefits and vacation time, great coworkers and management, union representation, plenty of employee engagement activities, and the pay is reasonably good.

    Cons

The computer system is frustrating. Working with some customers can be extremely difficult and frustrating. Workload can be extremely high, and quality standards are high which can sometimes make it feel impossible to meet expectations.

    Advice to Management

Keep reaching out for employee input.

I worked at Michigan Department of Health and Human Services full-time

    Pros

All of my co-workers and most of the first-line supervisors were great. Everyone tried to support one another and did very well to keep positive. It's a union job if you feel like you need protection. The pay is good as long as you don't allow yourself to get trapped by the golden handcuffs (when you make too much to quit).

    Cons

The job is emotionally draining due to all of the bureaucratic red tape you have to go through and the horrors you hear about children going through...daily. Endless reports and investigations with unreasonable expectations. Most of the department heads have never done the ground floor work, so don't expect that they will listen or care about your concerns, they won't understand the struggles because they have never done...

    Advice to Management

Hire more workers and hire workers that aren't over-zealous in wanting to consistently remove children from their homes. There are so many other ways to work with families before a removal is truly needed in most cases. Hire more workers and maybe a few more after that. Oh and quit playing politics in the local offices, it hurts morale and aides people in making a decision to leave. Just some friendly advice :)

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Michigan Department of Health and Human Services full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Pay is alright, schedule is flexible.

    Cons

The pay is not commensurate with the off hours spent on cases, there is no work-life balance, the public hates you, the training is grossly inadequate for the job that you do, the caseload is ridiculous and the expectations are unrealistic for the amount of work that has to be done on each case.

    Advice to Management

Support your workers, when they ask for help for months on end, don't brush them off and then act surprised when the cases aren't up to snuff.
