    Frequent Burnout

    Aug 14, 2022 - Child Welfare Supervisor

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Excellent benefits. Pay increases are frequent. Remote work - w/supervisor approval. Paid state holidays off. State vehicles available to drive for home visits.

    Cons

Low starting pay compared to recent retail employers - not worth the stress for new college graduates. High caseloads. Supervisors are so overwhelmed with meetings, spreadsheets, supervising court hearings, and reporting data that they don't have time to supervise workers. No matter how short-staffed, workers are expected to get the work done - this makes it hard to do anything more than to ensure kids are safe and then have to move on to the next case. Some supervisors are disrespectful and belittling to workers - on a power trip, bragging about being friends with upper management to intimidate workers. Promotions are no longer merit-based but given based on favoritism even if the person doesn't have enough experience to do the job. Federal oversight data is not accurate. Workers and supervisors are pressured to close cases to maintain caseload count within federal oversight requirements. Cases are not allowed to go overdue even if it needs to remain open.

Toughest Job You Could Ever Love

Aug 23, 2022 - Benefits Specialist in Battle Creek, MI
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Having a career that allows a person to help individuals find a better quality of life or simply help a family through a difficult time is the best career to have. Working at DHS provides that opportunity every day.

    Cons

The case load is extremely overwhelming. The need is obvious so why not hire more specialists rather than pile a case load of 500+ on the few specialists working their hardest to meet the number goals placed upon them daily?

    High caseload

    Oct 10, 2022 - Foster Care Specialist

    Pros

Pay and benefits. Working for state has many benefits over working for private agency. The pay is much higher and the benefits are great.

    Cons

Caseloads are extremely high with no case aids to help. It gets very stressful trying to keep up with reports and paper work while making sure your families are getting what they need.
