I have been working at Michigan Medicine full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are amazing. I had to have a major surgery and didn't have to pay a cent! Great time off, retirement, and lots of options to modify work schedule (ie. 4 tens, or working remotely, etc.)

    Cons

Base pay was much lower than if I had gone into the private sector and there was no way to negotiate for higher pay based on skills and experience.

I have been working at Michigan Medicine full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits. Good pay. Many departments to choose from.

    Cons

When the hospital decides to build a new building they cut all raises. Doesn't matter how much you deserve it. Doesn't have the best competitive pay. St. Joes pays more but doesn't have the benefits like U of M. They limit what you can do within your title even if you are properly trained to do the task at hand.

I have been working at Michigan Medicine full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits. Flexible work life balance depending on dept. sense of pride working for the U. Split Pto Vs sick time which is great - but only for med school employees, not hospital.

    Cons

Low pay scale. Nepotism. Lack of accountability. Slow, old, unreliable databases. No bonuses given or performance awards if you work in the cancer center.

    Advice to Management

Hold your mgmt accountable. Don’t promote people to manage people who have no experience or business doing so.

I have been working at Michigan Medicine full-time

    Pros

Benefits are great! Retirement is a 2 for 1 match. 2 vacation days per month.

    Cons

It's a public sector job, so the salary is less than what I might be paid at a private company.

I worked at Michigan Medicine full-time

    Pros

There are a few good people moving heaven and earth to keep things working.

    Cons

IT management plays favorites and is paid very highly compared to staff. IT leadership is all about control and avoiding the tough decisions. An increasingly toxic and negative workplace with most staff trying not to show up on the radar. Poor internal communication. Staff are moved or let go with nothing said to the larger org. Benefits keep getting cut and aren't a selling point any longer, but at least the salaries are low — unless you're management. Everyone is operating from fear. Couldn't wait to get out.
