    • "Good community feeling"

      StarStarStarStarStar
Former Employee - Surgery Scheduler in Ann Arbor, MI

I worked at Michigan Medicine full-time for more than a year

        Pros

Great community to work with with some bad eggs here and there. Great benefits in terms of health insurance(especially if you're going to have a baby) and vacation/accumulated paid time off

        Cons

Salary and benefits is heavily managed by HR, so it is standardized within the hospital, it doesn't encourage you to stay in a position for a long time since you hit the ceiling of your position soon and have to change positions to get to higher salary levels. Pay is typically low and the work intensity varies depending on the department you work for

I have been working at Michigan Medicine full-time for more than a year

        Pros

Elite title Core facilities Lots of seminars on career opportunities

        Cons

The culture is not very supportive of PhDs in my opinion. Far more attention is focused on the success of the MD fellows.

        Advice to Management

Treat MD and PhD fellows as equals

I have been working at Michigan Medicine full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

Benefits and PTO for non-exempt employees.

        Cons

Working in the world of healthcare can be frustrating. Lofty goals such as "solving healthcare" or "making health systems better for all" are nice mission statements, and sound philosophically appealing, but are also very difficult to see/measure real-world impact. Large system of red tape prevents ideas from being quickly implemented or even getting off the ground. A clear division between "faculty" and "staff". Very...

        Advice to Management

Intelligent/innovative employees can come from all walks of life. Simply because someone does not have a Ph.D. or M.D., does not mean that employee is not worthy of having ideas or contributing to the larger mission / objectives. Many times, "staff" is treated poorly due to the fact that they are not doctors.. although this is mostly a product of working in an academic environment.
