    Pros

Free tuition, good insurance. Getting to learn a great deal about my field of interest from experts at world class facilities.

    Cons

Classes are tough, but it's grad school. Time off and work load aren't consistent, but are very advisor dependent. A number of my peers have to wait a couple to several years to become research assistants.

I have been working at Michigan State University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A vibrant community of scholars. Park like campus. Down to earth colleagues that care about everyday people and doing good.

    Cons

Unionized staff sometimes lack survival instinct in the private sector. The colleges sometimes forget they are part of university. Faculty can be sole proprietors.

    Advice to Management

Don't sweat the small stuff. Make it easier for good ideas to get moving and gain momentum.

    Pros

Great benefits for employees, campus commitment to diversity and growth.

    Cons

Lansing: a nice and affordable community that sometimes feels a bit lackluster. The administration is sometimes disorganized, but mistakes, missing reimbursements, etc. usually get taken care of *eventually* (=no better or worse than your average big university).

I have been working at Michigan State University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible scheduling, supportive staffers/colleagues/superiors, just above minimum wage, with lots of opportunities for growth.

    Cons

Nothing glamorous, menial labor mostly, other opportunities available though, grunt work mostly at lower levels.

    Advice to Management

Make growth opportunities and pay grade clear at the start.

I have been working at Michigan State University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working here is very safe... people don't often get fired. You have good benefits here, too.

    Cons

There is a definite lack of motivation to make anything change across the university. You will absolutely find better compensation almost anywhere else for a comparable job.

    Advice to Management

Working in MSU is often times a lot like being on a sailboat in the middle of the ocean with no sail.
You might get where you want to go, but there's nothing pushing you in the right direction. This needs to change.
