I worked at Micron Technology full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Back in the old days (1999-2002) Micron paid wages to enable a middle class to flourish. Bonuses bought that lifestyle to many (and not just firm employees-but Boise-through the multiplier effect) that sadly (along with the bonuses) no longer exist. Boise could have been a tech legend, but is now satisfied with being California's retirement home.

    Cons

Secretive, insular culture. Hostile to new ideas. All the bad things mentioned in HP's 2005 White Paper. The company after 2007 is like a star in the sky- dying but not yet dead.

    Advice to Management

Why bother ?? No one really listens.

I have been working at Micron Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Modern equipment. Most coworkers are highly intelligent and skilled.

    Cons

Frequent layoffs, raises frozen for years, bonus canceled frequently, health insurance more expansive than ever if you have a family. Entrenched management not open to new ideas. Least fun job I have ever worked at. As an example no one would even think of dressing up for Halloween.

    Advice to Management

Senior management should review the performance of mid level managers. Lower level employees are exhaustively reviewed but maybe you should think about reviewing managers performance and having their reports review them as well. Managers are vengeful for negative comments in the employee review/suggestions surveys.

I have been working at Micron Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great Operators, Techs, Engineers, and Supervisors.

Education assistance; however, it needs to support department (my bosses) goals or else classes will be denied.

    Cons

Expected to work 55+ hours week or else you will be up for layoffs. I recommend that you be the top in your group and you will be fine.

    Politics are really bad...

Restrooms are messy and stalls always full, you might need to wait or walk 15 minutes until you find a restroom stall that is not occupied. There is blood on the stall walls frequently that does not get cleaned which can stay there for months. Typically on the back doors of the stalls...

    Advice to Management

Change, everyone changes except the management and they never get laid-off ever under no circumstances.

Cost cutting has gone too far to the point where you cannot even expand the bathrooms or pay someone to clean them properly.

Being asked to manipulate data to support something my boss told higher management about is getting old...

I have been working at Micron Technology full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Near to Washington, DC and other northern virginia suburbs -

    Cons

fab has shift schedule which is fixed - so you are on day or nights- you are stuck there - the promotions are difficult - there is too much favoritism - nepotism - good old boys club

    Advice to Management

promote or higher folks who are capable - not who you know -

    * Compensation gets lower every year
    * Limited compensation upside in good years
    * No limit to compensation downside in bad years

    Advice to Management

Good luck surviving the next down turn?

I worked at Micron Technology full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Top-notch technical talent and a lot of behind-the-scenes innovation. The Crucial Memory division is successful in spite of the corporate connections.

    Cons

The worst senior management team I have ever been involved with. Duplicitous behavior is the norm, and that trickles down through mid-management and the rest of the workforce.

    Advice to Management

Step into this century folks. Theory X management might have worked on production lines during the Industrial Revolution, but has no place with knowledge workers in the 21st Century.

I worked at Micron Technology full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They hire smart people making the teams you work with really good. Lots of experience in the industry to build off of and they are willing to give people a chance. Great benefits especially the extras such as in town discounts and their gym and on site doctor's office. 401k matching is really nice

    Cons

Very specialized knowledge, no real way to transfer out if you stay too long. World wide teams makes it difficult to time meetings and to get work life balance. on call was a nightmare. no real support while on call. Due to layoffs and outsourcing there was a significant age gap between senior developers and new hires. This should have resulted in good opportunities of advancement but i didn't see that.

    Advice to Management

Take better care of the least of your employees. Especially the janitors and security. Everyone feels it when these jobs aren't being taken care of.

I have been working at Micron Technology full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay, benefits, bonus is good if market is good, education help ~ 7000$ for a grad degree.

    Cons

Oh, where do I begin? Unstable market, horrible micromanaged management, very little scope outside the industry, very little room for innovation.
Bosses are not very motivating as they are also being squeezed by the upper level.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your people, encourage them to think outside the box rather than within the status quo.
