I have been working at Microsoft full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great company with a lot of great people, and the luxury to invest in visions.

    Cons

Big and sometimes very bureaucratic. Very afraid it cannot shake the reputation, aquired in the 90's and early 2000's of being evil.

    Advice to Management

Keep on what you are doing now. And take risks.

I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You get to work with the smartest people in IT. Constant on the job learning makes the role fresh and interesting.

    Cons

Work life balance is horrendous. Low-level/mid-level management is poor. Certain company decisions seem at odds with the big picture of where Microsoft is going. Pay is poor when contrasted with work-life balance. You compete against some individuals in the stack rank system who are clearly gaming the system and not actually producing. Minimal ability to grow professionally. Most PFE's are permanently stuck in the role. The only real option for most PFE's is to leave the company and secure new roles elsewhere and then possibly return to Microsoft later.

    Advice to Management

Stop protecting "friends" of managers and get rid of dead weight. Investigate the claims some of your employees are making.

I have been working at Microsoft as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Wok hard/play hard philosophy brought to practice. They take great care of their employees.

    Cons

Sometimes working hard means disrupting one's work/life balance for periods.

    Advice to Management

Look to find ways to bring contractors aboard full-time. They're great people too!

I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Plenty of opportunities to learn and advance your career. Challenging environment and advance technologies.

    Cons

Time consuming. Work-life balance is a myth. But you have to work hard and smart to stay on the Top.

    Advice to Management

The new management figured it out. compete and partner with all viable technologies to keep Microsoft innovating.

I have been working at Microsoft (More than a year)

    Pros

They seem good on the surface and they really put on a good show to pretend like they are a great place to work. They have some benefits that look good.

    Cons

They are myopically focused on the bottom line and they try to find ways to pretend that isn't the case. But really they are looking for the easiest way to make a buck. So if they can hire you and bleed you for some account penetration they will. They have little to no loyalty to employees and often let batches go with little reasoning behind it. They have a singular strategy to drive people to consume more cloud and frankly its expensive and slow. The language we use to say what Azure can do has to be very carefully stated. Microsoft is famous for trying to be cool, yet lacking practicality. Products are often just a bit off the mark. Like Azure, is difficult to move architectures to.

    Advice to Management

Grow a soul. Stop trying to blame leadership failures on the field.

I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

For consulting, MCS is a good place to be, easy access to information and experts on Microsoft's platform.

    Cons

Not a really well run consulting organization. Not well appreciated by the rest of Microsoft. Does not seem to follow consulting practices that are common in the industry.

    Pros

A world-class organization, fantastic breadth and depth, amazing scope and possibilities.

    Cons

Severe work environment, complete focus on self, money and personal ambition.

    Advice to Management

Rethink your true values, be a better member and caretaker of the ecosystem in which we all live.
