I have been working at Microsoft (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent reputation. Pays well. Microsoft on your resume will open doors.

    Cons

Work-life balance. Too many levels of managers. Managers who should not be managers.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to WHI poll regarding immediate mgr assessment. If mgr continually gets negative reviews do something about it ie. remove mgr.

I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Always thriving, fast paced, high bar to reach, excellent tools (technology) and great resources to get your job done. Several new jobs to consider annually as you grow your career path within the company. Excellent colleagues who are mostly smart and fast. Lots of A-type afraid of failure people to work alongside. Bad eggs don't generally last.

    Cons

Stack ranking is officially gone, but it's really not. Still evaluated against your peers Vs. your own commitments against results. Company seems to be flushing out the senior (expensive) talent who exceeds quota in favor of junior (cheaper) talent who lacks track record of experience and success. Not sure if this is real or imagined but it's what I keep hearing as I network my departure. As with any company, lots of internal politics get in the way of success. Heavy on the process, too.

    Advice to Management

Upon creating a severance package, include *everything* that's relevant (Cobra, weeks severance pay, etc...) and the realization that advances will need to be backed out of the final severance check. Delivering that final check, then clawing back advances rightfully earned for doing one's job is just unfair. Especially when the job was eliminated (vs. termination or quitting).

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazing benefits, cool technology, generous bonus

    Cons

Unresponsive management, rampant incompetence, non-stop politics, the company treats every utterance and action like it's a lawsuit waiting to happen, force-rank removal system means all teams are constantly in flux which leads to an every-man-for-themselves culture where you will be thrown under the bus.

    Advice to Management

Time to spend more time in the field
