I worked at Microsoft full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Satya Nadella (truly inspirational and setting the right future growth strategy). Flexible working conditions. Salary is above average. Culture is supportive, hard-working and fun among similar level colleagues. The level of autonomy. (Managers can be trusting in your capabilities.)

    Cons

Overly focused on diversity to the point where it seems almost biased... Some bad apple managers are still there. Self-serving and political beasts... Oddly, jobs & promotions are based on who you know, rather than merit. The level of autonomy. (Managers can sometimes be ghosts...rarely in office. In my case, I had a manager that feigned interest and cancelled last minute on weekly 1:1s. I think we met face...

    Advice to Management

Review the staff engagement surveys thoroughly and take note of what is being said as much as what is not being said. Some employees are unable to give frank reviews even though the survey maybe anonymous, as it will be easy to determine where the feedback came from if they are in a small work team... Not all managers are the same in meetings with SLT, as they are with their direct reports... Maybe do not rely on surveys...

I worked at Microsoft full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

IMHO Microsoft is rediscovering its vision and drive.. leading to an exciting & innovative environment which attracts smart and motivated staff - who in my experience worked well together & internationally across teams Opportunity to work with leading edge products that have world-wide impact... and with teams that have a real desire to create high quality solutions for business and consumers.

    Cons

Change, you need to be comfortable working within a matrix managed, rapidly changing and evolving environment and organisation (and one still driven by a somewhat US centric view). Product development and therefore related coding and product management roles are still largely based in Redmond, limiting scope if you're a European based employee.

    Advice to Management

Be clear about the balance, focus and investment between consumer and commercial products and categories. The company feels that is swinging considerably towards the B2B / Cloud-Azure market, which is fine... (a great commercial opportunity) but can leave the consumer businesses exposed. The effective withdrawal from phone (while understandable commercially), makes the Universal App platform argument more challenging...

I have been working at Microsoft full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Travel, good salary, good career progression opportunities

    Cons

24/7 work - limited 'switching off' time

    Advice to Management

Audit subsidiary compliance with HR ideas - e.g. only work in office 6 hours per week. US idea, does not always flow down to subsidiary level
