I worked at Microsoft full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Microsoft is an amazing company - I was fortunate enough to visit the Seattle campus, Building 92. heard Satya speak live. Also visited the UK campus for FY18 readiness training - incredible experience. Brilliant coworkers, excellent managers, cool tech.

    Cons

The reality of this situation is when you are a contractor, you are not treated the same as FTEs. Contractors are considered "second class" and do not get the same treatment as FTEs. Irrespective of how successful you may be or your potential, the reality is Managers focus their time and grooming on FTEs.

    Advice to Management

Have a succession plan for contractors up front. Had I known our entire contractor team was going to be dismissed less than 90 days after accepting a position, with the intention of going Full Time, I would not have taken the chance on Microsoft. This has set my job search back a full six months and I lost good opportunities because I accepted what was to end up a very temporary position as a contract CSM.

    Be more transparent

I have been working at Microsoft as a contractor (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great opportunities to hold a satisfying job that also provides a very comfortable living. Dependent upon the role you have it can be very dynamic and always present new challenges, allowing growth in your work. The number of creative and intelligent people who are very active outside of work is another plus. The company, management and coworkers are extremely supportive of outside interests people have and it offers a very hands-off approach to your work, allowing you to get projects done without someone peering over your shoulder. Cross-team and organizational collaboration is very common and helps in networking and simply maintaining a social environment.

    Cons

Most teams offer little training to the role itself and it is often your fellow colleagues who will provide the most help getting you onboarded. Can be easy to get pigeon holed into a role so there are times when you may need to take a chance to break out and expand your skill sets to advance. Even so, self-improvement is very much supported here.

    Advice to Management

To upper management - give more support to your lower level managers so they have more time for their employees. Managers and workers alike are stretched too thin to fully support our projects and customer. Align divisions better so collaboration increases. Too often one division will make a change that adversely affects another, and while they want competition, collaboration is also a form of motivation and creativity.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Overall a great company, good salary and perks.

    Cons

The quality and ability of your manager will directly affect your success. Quality and experience of middle managers is shockingly bad.

    Advice to Management

Take more involvement in the development of your middle managers self driven learning with high level outcomes and HR managers that are unable to meet with staff leaves employees open to targeting by individual managers. HR processes are too remote.
