I worked at Microsoft (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people and (mostly) great products
Terrific career opportunities - at HQ in Redmond and in field roles
    Very competitive pay and benefits
An ability to re-invent itself. It can feel like trying to turn an aircraft carrier, but the company has proven it's capable of changing course

    Cons

They confuse "collaboration" with "constipation." Decisions can take too long, with too many "stakeholders" to try and satisfy.
    It's become very political
They think very locally (Redmond), but try to operate globally.

    Advice to Management

Satya has been a breath of fresh air and is on the right path to change the strategy and culture. Keep it up, but shake it up. Might be time to make some tough people decisions at the Sr. Leadership level.

I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of cool opportunities to get engaged in truly impactful, global projects; Good benefits (although they definitely aren't as good as they used to be); a well intentioned, dedicated employee base; very philanthropic

    Cons

Leadership is weak in many areas of the Sales, Marketing and Services... esp. HR Leadership. Decision-making in HR is lousy and you spend so much time, energy and attention covering your rear-end that it just sucks the life out of you. Its become a miserable place to work. Lastly, the HR team is constantly laying off employees... it sucks.

    Advice to Management

Bring in HR Leadership that has some backbone - and while you're at it... a change in Leadership in SMSG wouldn't be such a bad thing...

Great people and opportunity to learn a lot, opportunity to truly be an expert in your space.

    Cons

Very big company, things move slow at times.

    Advice to Management

Great leaders for the most part - keep pushing on collaboration and helping others win

I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great learning opportunities. Great place for those in early career who have much to learn and want broad experience.

    Cons

Not a great place for mid career or those later careers. Emphasis is on building and energizing a young work force. For those over 40, the culture is a bit like a frat house. Boorish and arrogant with siloed and myopic views.

    Advice to Management

Question your own story of superiority.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are great overall. Engineers get paid insane amounts. HR is seen an useless, and is paid similar in salary, but bonuses are barely negligible, especially stock.

    Cons

The performance review model, toxic, competitive culture. HR is the worst I have experienced in 25 years of my career. HR is insecure, not talented nor strategic. They only know how to do HR transactional work. Engineers do not respect HR, rightfully so. They only believe in the recruiting function, in "buying" talent, not building talent. Its very difficult to get hired so employees could be strong but the "lifers" stay forever because there are pet favorites and are not encouraged to bring newcomers along because the performance review model encourages individualism, not team.

    Advice to Management

Move along - there are better companies to learn how to be a real leader; don't stay in your safety net at MSFT. You need more experience, and you'd better figure out strategy quickly before the competition eats us alive!

I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Dynamic, incredible opportunites for your career and interesting work. Always pushing the envelope and never statisfied with the status quo. You have a lot of autonomy to make a difference . great people and always challenged by really smart and passionate people

    Cons

A little too focussed on process and measurement and not enough focus on the Customer and Competions Culture still too much based on individual accountabily and heros not enough reinforcement through compensation for teamwork

    Advice to Management

Revisit the performance review system creates too much internal competition and takes focus of the customer and the competition. Cut back on all of the internal meeting especailly those which require to much preperation and limit the amount of powerpoints
