I worked at Microsoft as an intern

    Pros

As a PhD intern at Microsoft Research you get to publish which is pretty good thing when you are doing your PhD. Also you get to connect with pioneer people in the field.

    Cons

I think the projects are not well defined in advance, but I guess that necessary is not a bad sign. That is how a pure researchy place looks like.

Management is very good. Some room for growth in terms of organization and structure, but ultimately very productive for all parties involved

    Pros

Great learning experience for entry-level students; it's a huge company with many resources, and they make an effort in the internship program to help you meet other interns and full time employees. Although there are relatively few designers at Microsoft, the designers I met and worked with were really great, talented people who were willing to share their knowledge and expertise. It was a fun environment and people are approachable.

    Cons

Projects can move slowly. There are too many different teams doing different things, and it's hard to take advantage of the abundant knowledge and skills or to collaborate across teams.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great pay, amazing intern perks such as the signature event, etc, great support from mentors and managers, great location

    Cons

No free food or snacks :( and sometimes you are just placed on a team i.e. you don't get a choice in where you go, which can be disappointing

    Cons

    - slow moving company sometimes

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of freedom, encouragement of self-determination. Minimal red-tape obstacles. Cross-departmental connections/collaborations are encouraged.

    Cons

Too much "freedom." Lack of clarity in terms of goals, strategy, and deliverables, on both a long-term and short-term level. The lack of support was demoralizing, and direction from higher-ups was infrequent and vague.

    Advice to Management

Decide on what you want, and then tell us that. We can figure out how to get there, but we need a destination, even if it's just an example.
