I have been working at Microsoft for less than a year

    Pros

Great corporate culture and rather falt management for such a big organization. I could get a deep dive into the strategy and that led me to work on various different subjects. The management really made me feel I was part of the team. Feedback and direct interaction is key, almost always in a good atmosphere. Awesome benefits.

    Cons

Heavy and long processes, loss of information due to the complex organization, best practices and knowledge is not sufficiently well transmitted.

    Advice to Management

Keep the good informal atmosphere.Take the time to explain the processes and tools so you can delegate responsibilities.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time

    Pros

Good package, smart people, interesting jobs and technologies. You Can work home if You need. Plenty of ressources to leverage.

    Cons

As all subsidiaires dependency on others decisions not always adapted on French market. Too much looking inside and siloed organisation. Some middle managers are not up to the task. You should consider yourself on CDD and always have "B" plan even if FTE. Internal evolution is very difficult.

    Advice to Management

Change the rating system and stop micromanaging people. Look further than the end of current quarter results. Look at real customer needs instead of selling what you have. Release some pressure on people you Will get more motivation. Stop promoting politicians and look at real impact of your troops within customers.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Microsoft for more than a year

    Pros

Fast-pace environment where huge things happen (what other company could have bought Skype or Nokia just like that!). Lots of opportunities. You are invited to change job every 2/3 years. Brilliant people.

    Cons

Extremely political environment, especially in sales department. If you want to succeed, you'll spend more time making your "work" visible than working properly. New job distribution at the beginning of each year. When you know the rules of the game, you can play it. You can be top of the game one day, and totally out of it the next day.

    Pros

Nice place to work, good environment with a lot of training available. The company have a culture that promotes constant development of its employees.

    Cons

Too many meaningless meetings to make a decision that could have been made in 30 minutes. Too much efforts spent by the management team in internal politics

    Advice to Management

Be more directly and clear in the decision making process. The new leadership team have changed the culture for the better and it must continue.

    Pros

If you seek some of these things for your job, Microsoft is for you : - good environment - cool people - flexibility in working - nice place, building, and services - good perspective of evolution

    Cons

Things that can be improved : not so much the start-up state of mind because Microsoft Engineering Center in Paris does not focus on innovation but on already existing products that might work better than now (e.g. Xbox Video)

I have been working at Microsoft

    Pros

Exciting broad range of products and areas of interest. Good level of responsibility and autonomy. Great salary and bonus possibility.

    Cons

Slower moving large company. Sometimes more focus on process/scorecard than on delivery. Marketing is very distributed across different functions within Microsoft with the actual Marketing and Operations department more focused on operations.

    Advice to Management

Clarify the field marketing function and separate Marketing/Operations. More proactive career planning and placement support for identified talent within the organisation.
