I worked at Microsoft full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Under Satya's leadership, Microsoft is transforming into a modern, innovative, exceptional organization. Microsoft cares about its employees, helps you successfully navigate your career and offers the opportunity to invent the future.

    Cons

Like most big companies, everything is always in flux and you are likely to be moved around as groups reconfigure. It's best not to get too attached to the outcome and enjoy the journey.

    Advice to Management

Keep adopting lean methodologies, empower individuals, embrace intrapreneurs.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time for more than 19 years

    Pros

many projects/products under many teams - so you can get chance to work on wide spectrum of projects. comparatively better work life balance and open culture than few other big companies.

    Cons

Big company - so more processes and more hierarchies. Big fat middle management. Many "low skilled but talk well" personalities.

    Advice to Management

reduce some more layers of middle management - ask them to be IC or to leave.

    Pros

Great benefits and amenities. Lots of opportunities to work on a range of technologies and roles.

    Cons

The stack ranked review model used has a tendency to foster non-cooperative behavior.

I have been working at Microsoft

    Pros

    Stable, long-term financially profitable company

    Cons

Disregard for employees and customers. Concerned only with the bottom line.

    Advice to Management

Go back to your roots, when Bill was at the helm, when the product, the technology, and the customer was the priority, and the employee was a family member, not a cog and a commodity.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Culture is really going in a new direction. Happy with Satya's leadership and the company has a lot of great projects such as HoloLens, Xbox etc

    Cons

Sometimes can be slow to react to changes in the industry and has a tendency to be beat to market by other companies.

    Advice to Management

Capitalize on opportunities! There are a lot of awesome people there and a lot of great ideas - be bold, change the world!

I have been working at Microsoft full-time for more than 19 years

    Pros

Things are changing for the best slowly. Great benefits; good work life balance. Company loves the employees. Lot of great projects and some amazing teams if you can find them. Great people overall.

    Cons

Still lot if large slow teams. Still lot of politics; low risk taking culture.

    Advice to Management

Break too down orgs. Give autonomy to smaller teams. Push harder to get rid of the "not built here" culture especially in Windows, Office...

I worked at Microsoft for more than 8 years

    Pros

You can achieve pretty good work life balance at Microsoft. Work is generally not hard, especially if you're not ambitious, you're told what to do, just get in, put in your hours, and get out, and you'll do better than 90% percent of people who are already there. Benefits are pretty decent, with the exception of the medical plan, which is a high-deductible HSA type deal. There are small pockets within the company which...

    Cons

The company is dying. People are disenchanted, unimaginative, and in general just don't care. A lot of things are "the way they've always been". Way too much people who have been there for 15-20 years and don't know any better. Terrible fragmentation between teams makes collaboration next to impossible. Unnecessarily rigid scheduling leads to sandbagging and hampers quality. Way too many PMs. People aren't interested...

    Advice to Management

Get rid of people who have been at Microsoft for 20+ years, or at least limit their influence. Hire more people from modern companies (Google, FB, Amazon). They're available, albeit very expensive. Thoroughly modernize development. Abolish rigid schedules for projects where they are not necessary (which is most of them, if you stop pre-announcing). Force the entire company to use the same bugtracker, distributed build/testing...

    Cons

    * Politics. Often decisions are made in the career interests of the leaders and not for the benefit of the company or employees

    Advice to Management

Provide a formal program, such as google's founders award to encourage and properly reward grassroots innovations that could positively impact the business.
