I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I could leverage resources from across the globe to achieve my research objectives

    Cons

Specialization is key, and you may not know much outside your domain

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

*If you get a good manager you will have a good time and learn a lot.
*It is a really good company to have in the CV.
*There are a lot of useful resources for the interns like mentor groups, intern committee activities, internal courses etc.
*Pretty good salary for an intern position.
*Flexible working time and possibilities to work from home (some managers won't allow this for their interns).
*Very good canteen that is subsidiesed by Microsoft.
*You will learn a lot about how it is to work in a big (American) corporation. Frustrating politics, red tape, pointless compulsory online trainings, way too much meetings, managers that shouldn’t be managers etc but also cool products, colleagues all over the world, lots of friendly people that wants to help, chances to learn every day, learning a lot about technology, team members and managers with massive knowledge etc. - It is all there.

    Cons

*Everything boils down to what team you intern in and who you get as manager. Some interns are doing normal FTE tasks with lots of responsibility and inpact while others are just used as cheap labour doing menial tasks.
*There are so much talk from HR and managers about the graduate program (MACH) but in the end few interns actually get a position.

I worked at Microsoft (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Facilities, flexible work hours, freedom

    Cons

Manager doesnt meet enough. My work was not properly evaluated. My manager was obsessed with theoritical aspecta rathee than the practical implementation of my project. Information regarding ppo conveyed to us very late(nearly 3 weeks after the end of internship).

    Advice to Management

Iterns should get to meet up more with their managers and their code should be evaluated which was not done in my case. My manager wasn't really concerned about my project and used to ask me questions on other random stuff. PPO decision should be communicated faster. I got to know 3 weeks after completion of my internship. Further when an intern is not given a PPO the reason behind that should be communicated back to us.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I worked in Microsoft Online in Shanghai. The interviewer was really nice and asked me a few basic questions about my previous experience.

    Cons

They didn't assign me a lot of tasks, so most of the time, I was kind of free.

    Pros

-Shuttle system all over WA to and from campus made life great.
-Yearly Intern Signature Event + free gift
-You will be in the company of talented and seasoned engineers.

    Cons

Most of Microsoft's products are strongly bound to legacy code, which makes them trepidacious about original ideas. I was supposed to make an extension to some auxiliary production software--it took six weeks (halfway through my internship) before I was allowed to write a line of code!

Take this with a grain of salt. At Microsoft, the most important thing is what team you're on. I was not very excited about my particular team's work.

    Advice to Management

Management is doing a good job of keeping a hulking metal behemoth like Microsoft from grinding to a halt. I wish MS could restructure its dependencies such that it could break more barriers with technology.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Incredibly smart full-timers
    - Nice office
    - Lots of discounts for being a Microsoft employee

    Cons

    - Project manager a little overbearing
    - Other interns strangely slow
    - Terrible workstation
    - Lots of irrelevant mandatory meetings

    Advice to Management

The internship is marketed as "garage"-like; one would assume that there would be a lot of freeness. In reality, we are always closely monitored. It's uncomfortable!
