I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits and intern perks; they really do try to make having an internship a lot of fun (probably more fun than being full-time). Seattle is a great place to spend a summer.

    Cons

Old, awkward to use tools can mean you spend most of your time waiting for things to build. Some teams are so poorly organized that no one knows what the team actually does.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great working atmosphere and perks. Mentorship was available and interns were given great guidance. Interns attended free concerts. My mentor gave me weekly reviews which were essential to my development and learning.

    Cons

At the end of the summer when offers were given out there were some politics involved. I believe that some offers were given to those who were not the best fit for the position.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The brought deadmau5 and Macklemore. Brand new computers and free soda and flexible hours. The perks of the large company are awesome like company events and gym membership.

    Cons

Don't pick team/ or project for summer. Most of the products are really boring and as a result the work that they make you do is not interesting.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Competitive compensation; ease of movement among teams in the company; management is fairly transparent with regards to feedback; if you seek a structured environment, this is probably a very good place for you

    Cons

Full-time employees seem obsessed with performance reviews; as an intern, I found myself explaining the basics of my project to full-time employees far more than I really should have, perhaps indicating a lack of knowledge and focus on my team; being a Microsoft employee is all about "drinking the kool-aid", that is, seeming dissatisfied with the way a team is operating is almost always met with negativity rather than constructive responses

    Advice to Management

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits-They provide pretty good benifits. Including gyms, transportation fees, relocation, flight...
Good salary-One of the most competitive salaries among tech companies
    Good perks

    Cons

    Too bureaucratic
    Boring works
    Can't contribute too much

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

They encourage people to move around the different parts of the company every 18-24 months. So one need not feel stuck no matter how un-motivating the current group or work is.

Efforts to promote meritocracy (but not always successful, as some politics naturally creeps in, in such a large company)

    Great work/life balance.

Various events to keep employees up-to-date of the new technologies.

Great food of every kind in the canteens.

    Parking never an issue.

    Cons

I was a finance manager intern, and before joining I did not realize that finance is implicitly viewed a support function. The influence of finance partners is not significant in the major decisions.

Groups work in their own silos, with little transfer of best practices among them.

    Advice to Management

    Break down the silos.

    Pros

Very friendly and talented folks; my manager was very resourceful and did not just give me a project that was swept under the rug.

    Cons

I feel like I could be making a larger contribution if I worked at a smaller company or SV area startup.

    Advice to Management

Would be good to let incoming interns know ahead of time what they will be working on for the summer.

    Pros

Possibly the most structured internship on the planet. Summer camp for college students

    Cons

ummmm.. It really depends on who you are - I just felt kind of lost in the company. However, it really is a great company - they treat their employees really well

    Advice to Management

try and relate more to the new hires

  10. "good experience, not enough support for growth"

    Pros

You have access to information about so many new products that are coming out
    Career path is explicit
    Compensation is very good

    Cons

Many of Microsoft's products don't win in the market
Being in the company is very competitive and work-life balance hard to achieve

    Advice to Management

Offer the interns more space to learn before throwing them into the fire. The transition from college to new hire seems very rough.
