I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Smart people all over the place. Highly used products.

    Cons

The experience is hit or miss depending on what team you are placed on and what they have you work on. 12 weeks is not a lot of time to do anything too important. But it is enough time to determine if your team is a good match for you.

    Advice to Management

MS has a lot of respect for their interns and new hires. It's a great company.

"Very good experience. The load is not very heavy. People are friendly inside the company. The company is very large."

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very Large. Good pay for software engineers. Good compensation for interns. Free gifts for interns every year.

    Cons

Company is too large. Food is not very good.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Microsoft has a great intern program - they really take good care of the interns with everything from the pay to the perks (gym membership, shuttles, bus pass, intern events, etc.) The work is interesting and the managers are usually pretty helpful. And Seattle is a great city to be for the summer.

    Cons

Since it is a big company, things move slowly. It's very hard to get intern projects pushed into deployment in the summer intern time span and so many intern projects die after the interns leave. Sometimes it can be very hard to find people with the expertise to help you

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Although it is in vogue to hate on Microsoft, it is a genuinely nice place to work. The people there are smart, professional and have a general air of maturity.

    Cons

The company is transitioning and while exciting, it leaves employees worried. I would say the meeting-to-work ratio is a bit too high for an SDE position, but that's the reality of huge corporations.

    Advice to Management

To steal a play from the recently removed: Communicate, Communicate, Communicate. The old silos in the company are going away, but there are places where collaboration is encouraged but not well defined. Make sure that you give a clear vision for the One Microsoft and that it makes its way down to those who put the code to the products.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Many resources to learn and grow, knowledgeable employees, many resources for fun events. Cool products that are widely used Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Xbox. Work life balance was also very good, no one expects you to work past 5 pm.

    Cons

I found it hard to make an impact at such a large company. It seemed like nothing I did really mattered and they put me on working on internal tools. Also Seattle location is not great, rained almost every week multiple times a week and that made it hard to go out and explore.

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people are very friendly. Good work-life balance. Manager is transparent in what she is thinking. Microsoft is moving towards better business model.

    Cons

Big company problems; bureaucracy, slow, inefficient, lack of clear communication between groups. Too many layers between development and release (dev, QA, business, etc).

    Advice to Management

Remove barriers. Move faster. Break things. Fix Things.

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - While many people thought Microsoft environment is not very friendly for new employee, I found it very friendly and full of new opportunities to explore.
    - They took very good care of Interns by providing subsidizing housing and car rental, plus many exciting events.
    - I was working with the Bing section, and there are many unexplored areas in Bing which can be a great opportunity to make significant contributions.

    Cons

    - In comparison with companies such as Google, there are way less PhDs in the staff which sometimes make it harder to introduce radical research ideas.
    - The company went to a massive lay-off when I was there. Although that obviously don't affect interns, if you are considering Microsoft for a full-time position, there are risks that one of these lay-off waves hit you.

    Advice to Management

    - Have better collaboration with researchers in MSR. Microsoft is lucky to have such brilliant scholars as part of MSR and if their creativity can be managed well, they can make huge contributions to the company.
    - Start more active programs of Fellowships for grad students, same as Google and Facebook, to enhance the picture of company and attract better talents.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

A lot of excellent researchers here. Here you can work with some of the best researchers in your area in the world.

    Cons

Nothing obvious as for an intern.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Focus on research projects, renowned researchers, well-designed intern programs, many opportunities working with very famous researchers. Researchers can extract papers from your projects even if they are not much successful.

    Cons

Even though you showed good performance, the company does not given any offer. You can only obtain publication, chances to expand your research connections, and some salary (which is slightly better than other companies).

    Advice to Management

Very flexible, free, you may work at home, and you can work in anywhere you want.

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay, stability, work/life balance (big corp, not held too accountable for much), Seattle-based, working with some tech legends

    Cons

Lack of culture, feels stale, they're changing things up but there's only a few groups that have a great culture and you have to know what you want beforehand to get yourself there. Little impact, waterfall methods. Median age 40+
