I have been working at Microsoft full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Well rounded people. Driven, collaborative, visionary people. The overall employment package is great too.

    Cons

Big company. Hard to make things move as fast as you may like. On the other hand, if you are able to make things happen, you'll be a hero.

    Advice to Management

Keep on doing a great job. Try to stay aligned to the top leadership to help Satya have the impact he needs to.

I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large company good processes, good benefits for families. Still makes a lot of money. Provides a stable job with not much to worry about

    Cons

Microsoft is no longer an innovator in the tech space and seems to be playing catch up in a lot of the sub-spaces, e.g. mobile.

    Advice to Management

Need to modify the stack rank. Many people are in situations they can't control and as result don't rank so high. Less middle management

    Cons

Politics, Compliance, HR is the true decision maker in the business, has become extremely sales based and hurts customer experience.

I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very smart group of people, interesting trechnologies and center of PC business

    Cons

Stack ranking in a very arbitrary way ruins the experience. You can find yourself in a no win situation for no apparent reason other than your position within the company. You can do a great job and still be ranked last especially if your group in general is high performing

    Advice to Management

    Drop stack ranking policy

    Pros

Incredible benefits, smart people, collaborative environment, strong support, committed leadership. Microsoft was the best place I have worked so far in terms of personal learning and opportunity

    Cons

Worked a lot of hours. There were times when deadlines did not make sense or were moved without consulting the project team

    Advice to Management

Apply more agile methodologies to increase project efficiency. Cancel earlier in the project when needed. Sometimes projects that are failing continue on too long
