I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Challenging work and great learning Experience!

    Cons

Work-Life balance can not be achieved. It was great when I didn't have children but very difficult afterwards.

    Advice to Management

Management is also under the same type of pressure so I'm not sure if I can give them any advise.

I have been working at Microsoft as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

It is well established global company that is the leader in its field. You will find some of the brightest minds in the world working here. The experience will help you wherever you decide to go with your career.

    Cons

As a large company goes, it can be quite overwhelming to work here. And there are times when the workload may impede on your work-life balance. But, if you can manage it, you will be fine.

Putting labels during reviews that should go away this year. High competition.

    Advice to Management

Share your love with every of your employees, stop favoritism.

I have been working at Microsoft as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Learning environment with opportunities in many different areas

    Cons

Need to be able to hit the ground running and work with a lot of egos. Considering that everyone is fairly well paid, there are morale issues nearly everywhere and collaboration is not encouraged because of the review model.

    Advice to Management

Encourage collaboration by changing the review system! Work to decrease competition among divisions (would greatly increase the "bring to market" time for new products) and encourage innovation. Right now, everyone is scared to make big suggestions for fear of failure and how it will impact their review.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A great company overall. Pay is very competitive and even thought recent changes to benefit packages are passing more costs on to the employee, they are still among the very best.

    Cons

due to years of stagnant growth, it is increasingly difficult to move up the ladder. Make sure you are happy with the job you start in, because stories about moving jobs after 18 months are largely untrue.

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look at the review system. I work in a team of Ivy league educated peers and forcing top performers in to a forced bell curve creates a negative/cut throat work environment. If I leave Microsoft, it will be because I want a happier and more team oriented work environment.

    Pros

Great work place, opportunity for growth if you find a team that fits you and your capabilities. Steep learning curve for people seeking more opportunities

    Cons

Deep hierarchy due to size of the company. Many layers of team and needs to be willing to work with many team members to get projects done

    Advice to Management

Needs to be more nimble to respond opportunities in fast-changing eco-system. Scaling back on benefits might impact culture negatively and employee attrition

    Pros

    - stable company
    - good health benefits, especially when compared to other companies
    - very nice people in some areas

    Cons

    - too much politics
    - performance reviews completely based on seniority and trying to please the old staffers
    - difficult to move up

    Advice to Management

Improve performance system and get rid of the parasites. The company has a great product and smart people, but it's difficult to navigate

    Pros

-Great name to be on the resume
-Great products and smart people to work with
-Flexible working hours and private working space

    Cons

-Political environment.... You have to be able to talk... even talk about something one is not deserved.
-Too many layers and bureaucratic... hard to make a change. Making a minor often means going through several of teams and many months. Frustrating when you really try to make an impact.
    -No respect between different teams.

    Advice to Management

-Stop developing the products that are way behind our competitors, for instance.. Zune....
-Be willing to take risks, make some brutal moves. No pain, no gain. Stop playing safe cards.
