I worked at Microsoft full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working with large, brand recognizable customers to move services to the cloud. Microsoft often gets a 'first look' for cloud services from Enterprise customers, due to the long history of offering enterprise-grade solutions for corporate customers. Microsoft is for the most part an open and fair place to work.

    Cons

Engineering disconnect from field sales. Microsoft has had a very engineering-focused culture in the past, and sales is seen/treated as an afterthought or necessary evil. That's beginning to change somewhat, depending on the product/service and division.

    Advice to Management

Sales managers at Microsoft are buried in numbers/data, and don't take enough time to learn what the sales teams are actually doing day to day in order to increase business.

I have been working at Microsoft as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Great company, everyone is really nice & the hours are flexible.

    Cons

You are not an FTE so you don't get any of the perks (you can't go to team bonding events or lunches). If you want to move up, you can't talk to a Microsoft FTE about it, you have to apply through the Microsoft jobs portal (seems backward since you work with these people every day). Managers will just hire from outside not within.

    Advice to Management

Care about your contract employees and hire within your office!

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Teaches you problem solving skills, allows you to expand your thinking outside of the box.

    Cons

There could be very busy days and days where there are a couple of upset customers that express themselves in a rude manner. Then again that is every other retail position there are going to be unique customers.

    Advice to Management

Management is doing good at training the new hires and giving them a good introduction to the role.

    Pros

Great pay! Amazing benefits! Microsoft on your resume.

    Cons

No work life balance. Systems are still an inconvenience and many of the support channels do not understand what you have to do so there is always a back and forth.

    Advice to Management

5 years ago the policy was take care of your customer. Quit trying to be apple and only care about selling. Your customer obsession is what sets you apart.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, great benefits, great story and vision under Satya.

    Cons

Crazy cloud quota, churn (I had 4 bosses in 1 year), ridiculous number of internal tools you won't even hear about and half of them don't work.

    Advice to Management

Get documentation under control. Simplify tooling.

Get people in management that actually understand the value of what you sell and why a customer might want it. They should have a better understanding of the level of effort required to migrate to Azure before they get to lead a sales team. They just repeat what the slide deck says. I could go on and on....

Great company, great vision as of late, but just doing what every sales org does wrong; they hire numbers people, and not problem solvers with a passion for technology. I can't tell you how many times my manager(s) ignored my questions, suggestions or requests and then a day later asked about my pipeline.

Put people in management that are technical, but can also sell. They will be able to guide sellers, help them with messaging, and connect with customers. Do something different!

I hit my numbers. When I resigned, my manager didn't even ask why. He said that he would put in positive comments and recommend me for rehire.

He missed the absolute root of the problem.
