I have been working at Microsoft full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great Benefits, work-life balance, people. If you are a hardcore coding SE then you will fit in perfectly.

    Cons

Does not value the SDET career path at this time. Not a family oriented company now, few and disorganized family events.

    Advice to Management

Reconsider the SDET to SE conversion, you need individuals that just get the "grunt work" done. Reconsider the family events, mandate that individual teams host multiple events if it is not possible to do company wide events. Non-Microsoft family members are the ones that support your great employees in this stressful, fast paced, demanding technical career. This might help retain more of your employees past the 3-5 year average.

I worked at Microsoft (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - You can get paid a lot to do nothing.
    - Nice facilities (some newer ones) and lots of amenities.
    - Decent engineers that get hired. Good ones leave within few years though.

    Cons

    - Politics pay more so if you learn bullying tactics and how to steal credit while shift all blame - you are better off than getting anything done.
    - Old/dated technology/tools: I have worked in 7 different positions there ranging from dev to test and realized in 5 years I am falling behind my development peers and had to leave despite ignoring politics and trying to do development.
    - middle management that insists on making decisions despite not knowing how work is done (they were busy playing politics)

    Advice to Management

Empower engineers. Flip org chart on it's head and serve your engineers and help them get stuff done. They do the stuff you get paid for.

    Pros

Great benefits. Great pay. Get to work on products used by millions. Microsoft as a company is very inclusive and encourages giving back.

    Cons

Depending on your team, your work-life balance might be an issue. Sometimes around releases there are long hours and pressure to get things done.

I worked at Microsoft (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Microsoft is a big company with lots of opportunities.
Good ideas can get traction wherever they come from. Junior employees can make a difference.

    Cons

In spite of an effort to promote a “Microsoft Culture”, different parts of the company have quite different cultures.
Often try to solve all problems by writing code – even problems that could be better solved other ways.

    Advice to Management

Find or grow middle managers who value people and grow teams. Take a longer-term view of organizational health.
Encourage engineers to broaden by switching teams more.
Focus on customers more and products less.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good culture and the people around me are generally nice however there are certain times when the stress is high that things go wrong.

    Cons

at certain times things can get frustrating and things tend to heat up which leads to some arguments.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the yearly evaluation or change it in some way or shape because people become everly political when it comes around.
