I worked at Microsoft as an intern (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great opportunity to collaborate with the best in the field. Build connections that will help in your future research career.

    Cons

Intern time is short. Not enough time to dig deep. You'd better come with some research idea with you when you start the internship.

I have been working at Microsoft as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Cutting edge technology, you really have so much impact on your customers and helping them transform their business
    - great, bright colleagues

    Cons

    - if you're on contract, you're very limited in your growth. The company has few FTE positions so landing one is quite challenging. Keep networking!

    Advice to Management

    - More FTE positions- it's clear that many of the contract positions are critical, why not convert them to FTE
    - Top mgmt is very open to chatting and very friendly- like the fact that it's not so hierarchical
