    Negative Outlook

I worked at Middle East Technical University (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great Campus, very nice staff and lab facility

    Cons

very slow, very bureaucratic (my advisor was a control freak lady), doing research without any purpose for publication, wasting money and budget. very weak support for conferences and.....

    Advice to Management

yearly assessment of their professors based on the publications, not relations. They should follow what the Bilkent university is doing in Turkey.

I worked at Middle East Technical University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

convenient working hours, great environment regarding culture and values.

    Cons

some problems regarding institutionalization of job titles and responsibilities.

    Advice to Management

For job positions requiring both academic and administrative skills management should create new job titles and positions such as "expert" to hire long-term contract based employees. Research Assistant position is a relatively short term position therefore do not respond to the actual needs of university in special programs and for jobs requiring administrative and managerial expertise as well as academic knowledge long term contracts are neccessary.

I worked at Middle East Technical University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The academic working atmosphere at the university is better than many other Turkish universities. You have access to ample resources and materials for most of the disciplines.

    Cons

Academical hierarchy is tough. Young researchers and non-academic employees face mobbing and peer pressure. Most of the facilities are provided first for older faculty, then for young researchers and then to students and other workers.

    Advice to Management

METU management should employ better measures to deal with mobbing at all levels. The values attached to METU should be protected the management. Currently only students and a few faculty members are seemed to care about these values.
