I worked at Middlebury College as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

It was a wonderful opportunity to work on an independent research project in the company of other students who were also working with my advisor. I gained valuable skills, such as quantitative analysis, teamwork, and independence.

    Cons

Working at Middlebury over the summer as a student employee, you are not the main concern on campus because there are also Middlebury Language Schools. You are restricted from speaking English in many areas and have to cater your schedule to these language students'.

I worked at Middlebury College part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You are allowed to learn as much as you want, as long as you put in the effort to do a good job.

    Cons

It can feel like the same thing every single day.

    Advice to Management

Ask employees what they enjoy doing most and try to give everyone a taste of their favorite roles.

I worked at Middlebury College as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible hours, independent work, good bosses and general managment. Plus, you get free meals at the dining halls! among other perks

    Cons

The main office can be a bit dreary -- it is located in the basement of a building. But this is only one of their offices on campus, others are nicer.

    Advice to Management

A little bit more structure would be nice, as well as an easier to follow work flow. At times things felt like they got lost in the shuffle.

I have been working at Middlebury College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent Benefits, community involvement, access to what is needed to perform your job, communicative leadership, opportunity to build valuable life-long relationships.

    Cons

High expectations compromise work-life balance, unbalanced upper management makes the organization top heavy while staffing limitations make more work for operational staff

    Advice to Management

Balance program opportunities with the need to actually get the work done

I worked at Middlebury College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Good experience in sales if you can land a higher-touch tour guide role
-As good as it gets pay-wise at Midd
-Office experience, for better and worse

    Cons

-Most of the lower-level staff are entrenched in the upkeep of their own roles and systems rather than the big picture
-Job critique and supervision comes from someone who has not experienced the students' jobs or needs

    Advice to Management

Focus much less on institutional checklists that do not correlate with better performance. Listen to the experiences of the students "on the ground"

  7. "Great place!"

I worked at Middlebury College (More than a year)

    Pros

Great colleagues passionate about their work. Engaged student body. Middlebury takes good care of their employees and is an inspiring place to work.

    Cons

As with the majority of academic institutions, there's some bureaucracy that slows things down. Overall there aren't many cons, though.

    Advice to Management

I don't have any advice for the management. They generally seemed to do a very good job, and I was pleased during my time there.

I have been working at Middlebury College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great experience working in lab, great team, great connections, learn a lot

    Cons

Time is not that flexible because of time-sensitive experiments, there is grunt work

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Middlebury College (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities, 2-week period at the start of the year closed for financial aid receiving applicants, a lot of jobs where you can learn valuable skills as well as a lot of jobs where you can get paid to sit around for 4 hours doing homework (last one could be a pro or a con, depending on who you are)

    Cons

The pay is not that great, though for a work study job I guess it's fine. For a place like Middlebury you'd expect wages to be higher, but I guess they make up for it by having so many on-campus jobs available. If you want one & go after it, you're pretty much guaranteed to find one. A lot of the jobs can be kind of boring - sitting at a front desk and doing homework for 75% of your time (lib, fin. aid, mail center, etc) which could be either good or bad depending on what you want.

    Advice to Management

Make the pay a little nicer, especially for jobs like TAs or RAs which are pretty specific/require previous skill & knowledge. Aside from that, keep having so many opportunities available & giving priority to the financial aid kids who really need/want it.

I have been working at Middlebury College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fairly easy to get jobs on campus as student, professors and students have very open communication

    Cons

It can become very difficult to maintain a balance between working on your own projects and maintaining work hours. Middlebury can be intense.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that the students are under immense stress, as the culture of the campus increasingly becomes competitive, brushing student-life problems under the carpet is more and amore common. Campus climate effects everyone involved.

Limited amount of formal professional development.
