I have been working at Millennial Media full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Millennial Media puts a lot of emphasis on culture and making sure that employees are happy. My coworkers are a joy to work with.

    Cons

If more time and money was invested into technology, I think that it would make a world of difference both for the business and for internal processes. There are many very manual processes.

    Advice to Management

Keep attracting good talent and focusing on keeping employees happy. Also put more emphasis on technology and I think it will be a very successful model.

I have been working at Millennial Media full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very technology focused and they work to keep employees happy. Unlimited leave policy. Bonuses and stock options. Competitive salaries. Worked on leading edge technologies.

    Cons

Worked there 2 years and had 4 managers. They seem to change the Tech leadership pretty often, and hence, the planning sometimes went out the window. Several abandoned projects while I was there.

    Advice to Management

When you lose people at a pretty rapid rate you should probably start looking at why they are leaving and try to address it.

I have been working at Millennial Media full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Historically, the company treated it's employees very well while pressing hard for optimal performance. There are some sharp minds at Millennial. There are people there who are good at team building and providing incentives. People can have fun.

    Cons

Very few people who are rank and file actually believe that the company is moving in the right direction. There seems to be a lot of flailing around. As far as values, I once heard an Account executive wonder out loud hot it was that she became such a liar, telling her clients that she was delivering on contracted media as the agency wanted. When presented with making revenue, no one in operations or sales seems to care about being honest with the client.

    Advice to Management

Realize that your employees are under extreme pressure and work harder to help them invested in the long term growth of the company. Articulate that growth better than you are now. There are some arrogant people on your team and they need to be weeded out as they are destructive.

I have been working at Millennial Media full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - fast growing industry
      - office is located in a great part of the city
      - most co-workers are intelligent and hard working
      - there are some good leaders here, however the very top of the ladder is negatively impacting their ability to lead

    Cons

    - stress level is unhealthy
      - executive team does not care to understand day to day efforts of individual contributors
      - the sales team runs the company - tech and other teams are driven by the wishes and desires of sales for better or worse... in the past year + it hasn't worked out well
      - inexplicable leadership decisions
      - poor infrastructure in terms of existing technology
      - inconsistent executive leadership
      - lack of transparency and cohesive communication from the top

    Advice to Management

You are handing over the keys to the company to employees from another company that was recently acquired. How did the numbers for that company compare to MM? How dependent was that company on one client? Are most of these employees located elsewhere? .... Why would you think this is a good idea? Have more respect for the leaders and employees that got you to where you are.

Create products that work and function as planned. This will keep sales from selling things that don't work (or just making it up as they go).. it will also keep the other teams from having to put out fires with duct tape on an hourly basis.

Try to improve the work life balance. There are people working here that are stressed to the point of it impacting their health on a daily basis. Sometimes it just takes consistent executive leadership and understanding. Also, culture isn't free breakfast... it's much more than that. Figure it out.

Cue the reply to this post from someone at MM within the next 7 days. When you see an obviously pro-MM post after a recent negative one... it wasn't real. FYI.

    Pros

They are in the right business and people get to work on some really cutting edge stuff. It's also a fun work environment where people enjoy themselves.

    Cons

Management, especially CEO Paul are just atrocious. The talent level is abysmal. I've never worked with so many dumb people before. Paul does nothing of value. He's not involved at all in Sales, Product, Tech. He cares more about what color the walls are painted and which band is going to play at the Christmas party. Sets absolutely the wrong tone for the whole company. Everyone leaves at 5pm, no one really gets startup culture and because of that Google will kick their asses on the long run. Also, their tech truly sucks.

    Advice to Management

Resign, you guys are total jokes and have no business running a company of this size.

I have been working at Millennial Media full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

In a very fast-moving work environment, there are countless opportunities to grow and to find new ways to get involved and grow your skill set. Here, the main focus seems to be on how to make the company better, and make yourself better in the process. It's a fun place to work and really provides opportunities for me that I've never had before. I've never felt so in control of what I can accomplish.

Everyone seems to be very willing to cooperate with one another, and it's always fun to tackle a problem head on with so many intelligent and interesting people. There really seems to be a good cross-section of people here from a lot of different backgrounds and with a lot of different mindsets. It's refreshing to be able to hear so many different opinions in a room, and work together to find what will work the best. Nothing seems to be fully out of bounds, and creativity is encouraged.

Reading some of the other reviews, I can understand that the "culture" here may not seem to be for everyone, but I'd encourage anyone to make his or her own decision about that. It's really a different kind of company here, and a place where people aren’t afraid to try new things: It’s a unique experience that's worth a look. I'm really happy I came here, and think others would be as well.

    Cons

Cross-company communication is a possible area for improvement, just like at any rapidly-growing company. Great strides are being made now to address this already, so keep up the good work and encourage the team atmosphere that’s really been coming on more recently.

    Advice to Management

Celebrate the diversity of the opinions of the company more, just like recent changes are doing now. Everything's heading in a great direction. Employees may just need a little push to build more confidence and find their own voice within the company.
