I worked at Milliken (Less than a year)

    Pros

None that I can think of.

    Cons

Terrible place to work, shady management practices. Will use you till you no longer are valuable to them.

    Advice to Management

Really look at what a person can contribute instead of how little you want to have to pay.

    Pros

Work life balance is great for now. Good pay and benefits. Overall great place to work.

    Cons

Since the departure of Jon Stoner the focus on people has dewindled for the focus onto money.

    Advice to Management

Take care of and grow your people and your business will grow and profit as well.
Don't over promise ROI to just get clients, makes it hard to keep them.
Make sure factories sustain standards for demonstration to clients or you will have a credibility problem.

    I worked at Milliken full-time

    Pros

Good place to START career. Fairly competitive compensation for initial job. A lot of hands on experience for chemical engineers. Because of company size, interaction with high level management is possible.

    Cons

Small scale chemical operation without a lot of engineering opportunities. Major lack of industry wide experience common in larger gulf coast chemical plants. The company is biased towards textiles despite high margins and profits on specialty chemicals. Not many career paths available. Most employees seem to have "settled." Engineers inappropriately advanced to management in multiple circumstances. Operators lack skills, responsibility, and character of other businesses. Milliken has a high ethical standard and should hire hourly employees accordingly.

    Advice to Management

Hire from major chemical companies to broaden experience base and skills. Provide more structured advancement to management. Release employees that consistently under perform on multiple levels from hourly, engineer, and management ranks. Provide more meaningful recognition for hourly employees that go "above and beyond."

    I worked at Milliken full-time

    Pros

Smart, dynamic and well staffed company and facilities. Diverse products and strong emphasis on growth. Good benefits apart from the standard that could only be provided by a private company.

    Cons

Everyone in the organization "grew up Milliken". Milliken historically hired only college graduates and they seldom left. So, there is not a strong culture of people management or one that encourages questioning or change. Still family dominated and South Carolina centric culture.

I worked at Milliken full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very good training. If you work hard and participate then you will go far. I started as a lab tech and worked my way up to advanced process improvement, it is doable!

    Cons

Compensation is highly dependent on type of education and not necessarily contribution. Sometimes reluctant to take one step back to take two steps forward.

    Advice to Management

Keep it rolling, watch out for money sinks with no returns.
