I have been working at Milwaukee Art Museum part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Being surrounded by the some of the most beautiful art in the world, working with some of the most intelligent and open minded people and experiencing a sense of wonder every day walking in. You never know who you are going to meet or what you are going to learn.

    Cons

    Pay, benefits, compensation, advancement, communication

I worked at Milwaukee Art Museum full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Beautiful building, great healthcare benefits

    Cons

Low pay for the amount of work, upper management is not inclusive or transparent and they do not listen to the advice or requests from their employees. They refuse to invest in their frontline staff and allow all other departments to walk all over them and treat them horribly. Their process of department reorganization involving mass layoffs, shady rehire practices and unclear transition procedures is borderline illegal.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your workers, especially the ones you rely on for membership sales and guest experience. People don't leave businesses, they leave management.

I have been working at Milwaukee Art Museum full-time

    Pros

Great people to work with. The Museum is an icon in Milwaukee and people envy those that work here!

    Cons

Management decisions are not always transparent.

    Advice to Management

Better communication with staff. Take people with you!

I have been working at Milwaukee Art Museum part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great management, business casual, opportunities to connect with the community. Truly a unique museum with an outstanding collection - I am proud to work here!

    Cons

Not much room for job growth.

    Advice to Management

Create more opportunities for growth so that employees can grow with the museum; and not use it as a lily pad for other career opportunities.

    Pros

Awesome people. Awesome space. Awesome art.

    Cons

If you don't like to be on your feet a lot, the MAV or Sales Associate position is probably not for you. Some times it can be really dead but in the store you can usually find little things to do or that need to be done.

    Advice to Management

Great store managers. Very fair and fun people to work with on the floor.

I worked at Milwaukee Art Museum (More than a year)

    Pros

    Beautiful building to work in.

    Cons

There is hardly any upward mobility and some of the management is horrible.

    Advice to Management

Involve employees in some decision making and ask for feedback. Generate ideas based on the needs of members and customers, even staff of MAM. Provide experiences for employees outside of MAM and provide trainings for current staff to stay motivated to come to work.

I have been working at Milwaukee Art Museum full-time

    Pros

Beautiful building and impressive collection. Great frontlines staff (Cafe, Store, Security, Front Desk).

    Cons

Awful management, huge separation of curatorial and events staff and frontlines personnel. Not acknowledged or treated as valuable. Personal time not valued as reflected on schedule. Hiring process is not stringent enough. Firing process borders on illegal. Some of HR staff not formally trained. Staff overworked and made to stand for hours on end.

    Advice to Management

    Invest in your staff.

I have been working at Milwaukee Art Museum full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It's wonderful to be around the art. Most of the people who work here are deeply committed to the art and the mission of the museum.

    Cons

Some silo effects between departments and entitled attitudes occur from those who feel they "exempt" from moving forward into a new world of visitor experience.

    Advice to Management

Generally speaking, upper management has done a decent job listening to employees. There are always opportunities to improve communication.
