I worked at Mine Safety Appliances full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Steady reliable job. If your performance is on par then you don't have to worry about losing your job. One of very few companies that still have a pension.

    Cons

Management is resistant to change. As many other reviews have iterated. This is a result of a major lack in the ability to move up in the company. A lot of managers remain in a constant stasis at their position.

    Advice to Management

Take a play from the book of Jack Welch. Rank and yank for a few years.

I worked at Mine Safety Appliances (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great environment, excellent benefits and pay. Very positive overall and great at making people feel welcome to the company.

    Cons

The training could have been better with more opportunities for better communication and more hands on learning. Not a clear message given as far as expectations within time there either.

    Pros

The people there are super helpful. Did not have trouble getting along with anyone. Never hesitate to ask for help.

    Cons

Not a whole lot of cons. Could have some more readily available resources. Pay could be better, perhaps more competitive.

    Advice to Management

Seems like good work is rewarded. An older crowd with a lot of experience so would probably take a while to advance.

I have been working at Mine Safety Appliances as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Freedom to complete tasks as you see fit as long as you meet the deadlines. Very nice professional staff. I have made a lot of unexpected friends. All the Co-Ops/Interns eat lunch together every day. Cool cafeteria. Pretty much everyone here is nice and everyone greets each other in the hallway (if they know each other or not). You also don;t have to worry about being micro-managed. Overall a great experience!

    Cons

They don't pay for lunch so you have to work 8.5 hours instead of a straight 8.

I have been working at Mine Safety Appliances full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great security, great benefits, good pay

    Cons

Bureaucracy, politics and high school drama exist, however I think that is common to most corporate offices

    Advice to Management

Listen to the unconventional voices too, not just the teacher's pets

I worked at Mine Safety Appliances full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Mine Safety has 2000 great people who really do work well with others.

    Cons

It's quite a distance from Pittsburgh and variations in economic conditions dictate sales and thus how much work is available.

I have been working at Mine Safety Appliances full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The remote agent program allows you to work from home 1-2 days per week. There are always food days to celebrate something or simply just because. There are different ways that coworkers can recognize your efforts that result in gift cards.

    Cons

Some days can be very busy especially when people are in training or on vacation. The department needs at least 2 more people to be staffed to the point that people do not get overwhelmed.

    Advice to Management

An investment in additional resources can help to improve the quality of work and reduce turn over in the department. The doesn't appear to be a contingency plan for when you lose employees. It is all reactive and very slow to react.

I have been working at Mine Safety Appliances full-time

    Pros

Work-life balance is excellent. Atmosphere is laid back and there is little pressure to overwork. Benefits are good and employees are treated with respect by management.

    Cons

Very little turnover means very little opportunity for advancement. Nobody gets fired so there are some really poor performers in the company.
