    Pros

    There are many ministries in Singapore. MHA is able to offer a diverse portfolio of functions and domains in its various departments, ranging from security, emergency services, rehabilitation, immigration, regulation, research, etc. to name the key ones. There is something for everyone who joins MHA!

    Cons

    Rank and file uniformed police, fire and prisons officers will generally have the advantage or be considered favorably progression and development choice positions, although scholars or management associates are considered equally for the upper management positions & development. A lot of deadwood, especially ex-military retired, occupying essential development positions and creating unhealthy cliques.

    Advice to Management

    This is a large ministry and there is a need to continuously guard against departmental turf guarding and different practices affecting staff progression. Staff in some departments have better opportunities than others. Everyone knows where are the 'Siberian Outposts'. These posts need to be better profiled and spotlighted. Ditch the ex-military retired deadwood. We need some for ideas but we do not need the whole...

        - Decent pay - Relatively short working hours - Work is not brought back home

        Cons

        - Leave application (Local and Overseas) can be quite hard to obtain and most of it is down to luck - Welfare pretty minimal on the ground

        - Have a bit of heart and compassion for officers on the ground, we're human too.
