    Negative Outlook

I worked at Ministry of National Development full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Located in town. Young colleagues.

    Cons

No career planning at all in the centre for liveable cities. Young fresh graduates are promised the ability to do real research only to find that clc does not practice proper research techniques. Due to its distance from the ministry, you will not get any exposure and will most certainly be confined into a space of no progression. Promotion goes to those who butter up bosses not those who work the hardest. Bosses...

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Ministry of National Development full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Friendly people. Flexible working hours. Good exposure for development portfolio given the many important stat boards under this Ministry.

    Cons

Good place if your goal is to be a civil servant but if you intend to equip yourself with transferrable skills and sectoral knowledge, be prepared to invest more than 2-3 years as you will need to learn a whole range of duties expected of civil servants.

    Advice to Management

Middle management seems overstretched, leading to bored/frustrated junior staff, though this may not apply to all divisions.

      Positive Outlook

I worked at Ministry of National Development

      Pros

Interesting projects on various facets of public life in Singapore, lots of exposure to various different ministries. Internship program provides many field trips and learning journeys which were also interesting.

      Cons

Not very much challenging work given to interns.

      Advice to Management

Spend more time working on career development and mentorship

      Neutral Outlook

I worked at Ministry of National Development full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

For people with commitments and looking for a stable job, government is indeed a good place to go. Also, the prospect for local Singapore University graduates is bright.

      Cons

Little, or close to zero, prospect for Diploma holders (with the exception that you are that super lucky to have an exceptionally supportive and appreciative reporting officer, who will go against all odds and fight, literally FIGHT, for your promotion based on merits).

      Advice to Management

Support staff are an equally important part of the organisation, it just isn't fair to keep expanding the top and neglect the bottom of the pyramid.

    • "Hierarchical. Tasks can be menial and mundane"

      StarStarStarStarStar
        Current Employee - Anonymous

I have been working at Ministry of National Development

        Pros

There is the possibility of attaining a scholarship if you perform well. Location is central too.

        Cons

Lack of guidance and true interest in developing careers of junior officers. Distinction between scholars and non-scholars is stark.

        Advice to Management

Keep a ear to the ground.

I have been working at Ministry of National Development full-time for more than a year

        Pros

The work at MND allows one to see tangible outcomes, essentially providing the opportunity to shape Singapore physically. The majority of staff are motivated and dedicated to public service. As a Ministry, you will work closely with Statutory Bodies such as URA and HDB whose staff are equally professional and dedicated to public service. Great leadership displayed by Minister Khaw Boon Wan and Permanent Secretary...

        Cons

Like all public sector jobs, expect a slightly lower pay for a similarly pegged private sector job. If you stay too long in the public sector, your private sector market value will drop. Some bureaucracy but definitely less than at other public sector agencies.

        Advice to Management

Stay true to the vision of creating an endearing home and a distinctive global city, and your staff will do likewise.
