I have been working at Minneapolis Schools part-time for more than a year

    Pros

It's very interesting working with students in the various neighborhoods. You will have fun and rewarding days. Very flexible, work only the days you want, there are many different schools and almost always shifts available somewhere.

    Cons

Some students can be challenging, and occasionally it can be hard work, as a substitute, to keep control of the classroom. You learn not to take the rough days too personally.

    Pros

Great part-time position with flexible scheduling

    Cons

It can be somewhat challenging to always be unfamiliar with your work environment as you will frequently work at different schools.

I have been working at Minneapolis Schools full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Hardworking and knowledgable colleagues. Strong teacher's union.

    Cons

Family health insurance plans are very expensive compared to the coverage offered in nearby districts. Principal and District Leadership turns over quickly making for ongoing change and instability at the building level.

  5. "Dynamic job but no training"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Employee - Reserve Teacher

I worked at Minneapolis Schools part-time for more than a year

    Pros

It's really fun to work with kids and to see the vastly different environments and classrooms MPS provides. Every day is different, which is fun and rewarding but exhausting.

    Cons

Literally training so you just dive in the deep end which doesn't really serve you or the kids.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Minneapolis Schools for more than 8 years

    Pros

The kids are great. They have a lot of challenges but they are really wonderful. Pay is pretty good compared to a lot of districts.

    Cons

Lots of test-score related pressure. Behavior challenges that are not adequately dealt with and learning suffers. Some schools have really challenging conditions (cleanliness, etc.). Despite good pay, tons of deductions that make your paycheck much smaller than it looks.

I have been working at Minneapolis Schools full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Union supports teachers and students.

    Cons

District is poorly managed, rushing students to graduate despite low skills. Admin is unsupportive of teachers. Buildings are nice infested and dirty.

    Advice to Management

Respect teachers and improve student achievement.

I have been working at Minneapolis Schools full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Teachers have great job security after achieving tenure, and the students are wonderful.

    Cons

Budget cutbacks abound, and there is essentially no hope of career advancement unless you are looking to be an administrator.
