I worked at Minnesota Department of Revenue full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Foot in door for state employment, good benefits, pension

      Cons

Run like a concentration camp. Director started "New World" which was euphemism for "Third Reich." Very oppressive, degrading, intimidating management style. Sups go out of way to screw you out of pay raises and sabotage your work. Only way to advance is being related to management. So much nepotism surprised hemophilia not running rampid. Union useless since do not support workers. This agency the absolute worst.

      Advice to Management

Treat employees respectfully, stop promoting incompetent morons

I worked at Minnesota Department of Revenue full-time

      Pros

The work here is for the most part interesting and if you don't like it there are opportunities for lateral transfers.

      Cons

It isn't what you know in this dept, it's who you know. If you butter up to the right people above you your chance for advancement is good regardless of qualifications. If you don't, this is the biggest dead end job on the planet. The supervisors are ruthless and except for a couple should be removed. If you are planning your lifelong career the odds of going anywhere here are minimal.

      Advice to Management

Nobody can advise management because they were once supervisors and that is where the problem starts and the ball keeps rolling.

I have been working at Minnesota Department of Revenue for more than 3 years

      Pros

Insurance, learning valuable to go to private sector, pension and stability.

      Cons

Bureaucracy, Nepotism (a lot of family clicks), advancement opportunities are tied to the clicks and family clans. You can maximize your earning potential if you move across departments laterally and to those departments nobody want to work or need more than average effort.

I worked at Minnesota Department of Revenue full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Clearly defined work and schedule. Work/life balance is amazing. Benefits are great. The office in St Paul is actually pretty nice. Strong union.

      Cons

Pay and upward mobility - typical government job struggles. I was disappointed that people don't easily move between departments. I was excited to get into the state system and thought I would some day be able to easily move to an area of more interest. Quickly I learned, that no one has ever done that.

      Advice to Management

Management needs to provide more opportunity within the state system. Don't silo off new employees. Millennials won't stick around if there is no future or the future is the same routine for 30 years.
